Open Up Like A Flower

“Thank goodness Floret!  I thought you were going to die or go crazy!” Apricot laughed.  I looked down and saw that I was not on the ground, but in someone’s arms.  It was Sage, surprisingly, he could lift me in that weird way that husbands do with their brides.  We were on our way to camp which was not too far away.

“You heard that?” I panicked.  Apricot was the one person that I knew that wasn’t the least bit afraid of me.  She didn’t need to know about my mom and what I had to go through.  Even I don’t know if I can trust myself enough to know if I was on Gaea’s side or not.

“Uh, yeah.  You were screaming ‘go away’ and other things.  What is going on?” Apricot wondered.  Sage put me down, absorbed in his own thoughts.

“Nothing that I can talk about,” I mumbled.  My chest tightened when I realized that I was almost killed in my dream.

“Yes you can, we are your friends Floret,” I glanced at Sage and saw him raise an eyebrow.  He definitely didn’t think that I was a friend of his.  I don’t blame him, I did save his life and he saved mine.  We aren’t exactly friends at all.  (Please note the sarcasm).  “Well at least I am, I won’t share your secret,” she reassured me.

She would try to figure it out if I didn’t tell her, but I wasn’t sure if it was something that I could tell her.  If I didn’t, she might try to work with Sage to figure it out.  “Don’t tell Sage about the details of how I was knocked out,” I whispered in her ear.

“I won’t,” she whispered back.  Sage honestly didn’t care and just walked by us on our way to camp.  “Now let’s go on a walk so you can tell me what is going on.  You know I won’t take no for an answer,” she rushed me away from Sage, whom still didn’t care.

“Yeah, that is kinda what you are known for,” I nudged her gently with my elbow to let her know that I meant it in a joking matter.

“Yay, I love walks anyway.  I can look around too since I might be here for a while,” she chatted as we started walking in a random direction around the camp.

I knew what she wanted to talk about, but I thought that it might be possible that I could spill only a little.  “You know, I wasn’t supposed to save you.  That was not Sage’s job either.” I took a deep breath, thinking of how I would word what I was going to tell her.  “I had a dream about the people who tried to save you last time, and I saw that they abandoned you.  The same thing happened to me,” I explained, letting her know that I had a reason to save her.

“What people are you talking about?” Apricot asked, I realized that she wasn’t full informed on what was happening.

“Sage and Ace, I saw it all from your point of view, the important parts of the story,” I admitted.

“What’s going on?  Please tell me the truth, I’m so confused.  I’m supposed to be a normal teenager.  Okay what are the important parts, I need to know!” she started to let it go.  I let her try to calm down, and tried to help by answering the questions that I could answer.

“I mean, when you tried to run away from Ace, how you liked Sage and all the fun y’all had, and the note,” I tried to answer.

“Yeah, what about it?” she asked, still a little too slow for my taste.

“You are a demigod, half god and half human.  We attract and fight monsters and go to this camp to train.  That is all I can safely tell you,” I informed her, not sure if Chiron would be upset is I shared any more information with her.

“I was already told that, I know all that.  Why do you think I asked you who your godly parent was?” she reminded me.  I was not sure what to say.

“The finder that saved me was kinda my boyfriend, almost.  Then my mother claimed me and he ran away, scared of me because of my mother,” I looked down at my arm that was covered with the designs.

“I’m sorry, but Demeter isn’t that bad,” Apricot told me.  I had forgotten that she thought that Demeter was my mom.

“Yeah,” I tried to keep the guilt out of my head.  “My parent is Demeter,” I doubted that she would care the least bit about me so she wouldn’t notice my pain.  It turned out, she noticed it.

“Wait,” she paused, looking into my eyes.  “No she’s not.  You’re lying.”

“We are in war with an evil Earth goddess,” I started to explain, enjoying the last few moments that I had without her being scared of me.

“Wait…you’re talking about… uh… What’s her name?” she wondered.

I wanted to show her the good that I had so I grew an apricot tree in front of us.  “And, Gaea is my mother.”

“Someone will love you just for who you are.  Come on, it’s getting late.  Thanks for opening up to me.  I won’t tell anyone,” we started walking toward camp.  I felt like she was rushing to get away because she knew who my mother was, I guess that Rain and Alex will always be the only ones who will fully understand.

“Is Sage smart?” I blurted.

“Um, I would think so since he is the son of Athena,” she answered, unsure.

“Just be careful what you say, he could figure it out by just knowing that I grew that tree,” I warned her.  She had my life in her hands in a way, I had to warn her that Sage could easily take it out of her hands and smash it on the floor.

“Speaking of the tree, it looks beautiful.  And I will, I might not be the daughter of Athena, but I am smart.  At least I think I am not the daughter of Athena.  At least I think that I am not the daughter of Athena.  Are you coming?  It’s getting late, can you keep a secret?” she sounded a little rushed.  I really felt like she was trying to get away from me now.

“I’m coming.  Yeah, I can keep a secret.  You got a lot of dirt on me, literally,” I said, referring to how much she could use the secret against me.

“Haha, sounds like a daughter of Aphrodite.  Anyway, its not a big deal.  It’s just I don’t like the dark so we need to get out of here, like now.  Please?” she rushed toward the camp.

“Calm yourself,” I said as I jogged to her so I could catch up.

“Um, where do I stay?” Apricot asked.

“Hermes cabin, tell them that you are undetermined,” I informed her.

“Okay, thanks.  Goodbye Floret,” she started walking toward the big house.

“Bye,” I said, not sure if she could hear me.
