Corridor leading to the lift, that was supposed to take us to the underground parking area was dark and shadowed. I’m glad P’Pha insisted on coming with me. He even slowed his stride to match my steps. I cannot fathom why he was being so chivalrous today. He was kind of rude at our last appointment. Whatever it is, I’m glad.

When the lift stopped at the Basement 2, we both got down. I turned to him and smiled up.
“Thank you for everything P’Pha.” I bowed respectfully. He slipped his hands inside his white doctor’s coat and smiled crookedly at me. I used to love that  smile which resembled a smirk than a smile. I remember hiding behind  ixora bushes and spying on him, while he played basketball or just goofed around with friends. It was such a refreshing feeling to have those smiles directed at me.

“Give me your phone number

“Give me your phone number.” He fished his phone out from the coat pocket. “I will send some links of videos for you to watch. Follow the exercises showed on them whenever you can.” He took my phone and started exchanging numbers. “Or, my other friend Beam is a sports therapist. I can ask him to help you.” He handed back my phone. And that smile reappeared. What’s with constant smiles? P’Pha I knew back in school seldom did that.

“Thank you so much P.” I changed the bags to my other hand and shifted awkwardly.

“Let me know. You have my number.” He stood up straight and looked around. “Where’s your car?”

“Right there P.” I pointed my finger at the black minivan parked half hidden by one of the gigantic pillars that held up the basement. “Thank you for everything.” P’Pha pressed the button for lift.

“Take care, Nong Yo.” He gave a full blown smile and I was  totally mesmerized for a second.

“You too P’Pha.” I mumbled and walked hurriedly to the minivan, adjusting my hoodie properly to hide my face. There were only few vehicles parked around the basement and since it was later than midnight I didn’t expect anyone to be there. But I can’t take any risks.

I went to the van and tapped the glass. Driver must have fallen asleep. I didn’t inform the management about my real reason to this visit. I said that I was visiting a close friend. They assigned the driver and the car without any questions. I’m surprised they didn’t send anyone from my public relations team to accompany me. Maybe because of the lateness of the hour.
