Logan was getting chocolate chips from the refrigerator while Patton's dad bothered Patton about Elliott.
"Is Elliott your secret boyfriend?" the father asked.
"No, Dad!" Patton whined. "He's a friend and we're not dating!"
"You know I'm okay with you being gay!"
"I know that, Dad. And I'm openly gay anyway. But I'm not dating anyone!"
Logan felt a pang of jealousy for a moment. Virgil and Patton were so lucky to have such a great dad.
"Suuure. Oh, your mother should be coming home soon! Tell Virgil to wash some dishes, because I'm going to take a nap."
I wish Mom came home every day, Logan thought with a sad sigh.
"Okay!" Patton nodded. "VIRGE! WASH THE DISHES!"
"WHAT THE FUCK? WHY?" came a yell from another room.
"DAD SAID SO!"
"FINE!"
Virgil trudged out of his room and went to the sink as Logan handed Patton the bag of chocolate chips. Patton carelessly dumped half the bag into the mix.
"I can do the rest, Logan, thank you!" Patton said cheerfully. "Um, if it's not too much to ask, can you check if Mom's home yet? Like, if a white car is outside?"
"That's fine with me. I will be right back." Logan then went off to the living room which contained the couch on which Mr. Greyson was napping on.
It was in that moment that Logan got a good look at Mr. Greyson.
He doesn't look like an alcoholic.
He doesn't look like he hates his kids.
He doesn't look like he hates everybody.
He looks so normal.
It was weird to see someone so outgoing and charming be called a father.
It was weird to see someone who didn't look like he brings vodka everywhere and wants to beat up teens be called a father.
"Logan?" Patton and Virgil asked in unison.
Logan snapped out of his thoughts. "Yes?"
"Are you okay?" Virgil whispered. "I mean, you've been standing next to the window for a long time now."
"Oh. Yes. I am fine. Your mother isn't home yet."
Logan kept his cool, but he was so...
So...
Disappointed. Sad. Furious.
Interrupting his thoughts was the sound of the garage door opening from downstairs.
Virgil got some clean plates and Patton's cookies were still in the oven. They'd have them for dessert.
Mrs. Greyson saw them all in the kitchen. "Who's this new young man?" she asked, gesturing to Logan.
