She Had The World started playing on his phone, and he knew someone was calling him. He wiped away his tears and picked up. "Hello?"
"Virgil!"
He smiled. "Hi, Lo."
"Wait, were you crying?"
"What? No..."
"Oh.. okay. How was school today?"
Virgil sighed. "God, it was awful. Honestly, this week without you has been the worst few days of my life."
"What happened?" Logan asked kindly.
"Uh, a lot of shit. So what's up with you? Feeling better today?"
Logan didn't reply for a few seconds, but then said, "No, not really. I've been very unproductive. I haven't done anything school related since Sunday because this psychiatrist insists on talking to me. All the time. His name is Dr. Mendel, and he's very nice and funny, but at times, I can't stand him."
"Oof. Lo, don't worry about school. Worry about your health."
"I know I should, but I can't let myself get behind everyone else just because I'm mentally ill."
"You know our school. You're probably the smartest and not hardworking one here. Even the seniors are fucking stupid. You'll never be behind."
"That is a good point."
"I love you. I wish you were here."
"Me too."
Virgil couldn't stop his gushing. "You're the best thing that's ever happened to me." And then he was crying again.
"Virgil, don't cry," Logan said softly. "It's been less than a full week and we've spoken on the phone. I miss you too, but I don't know how long I'll have to be here and you should worry about your academics. I don't want to get in your way."
"I'm an emotional mess, I can't just stop crying!"
"I love you so much, Virgil. Please take care of yourself."
"I mean, I'll try?" It was a struggle to speak while crying hysterically.
He realized he was still outside. He turned the key in his doorknob and stepped into his house, still a mess.
"Good. Dr. Mendel wants to talk to me right now, so I have to go, but I promise to call you as soon as possible."
"Okay, Lo. Bye."
"Goodbye."
"I love you."
"I love you more."
"How long will I have to wait?"
"I'm unsure."
"How long do you think?"
"Uh, I'm unsure."
"Oh.. okay. Bye."
"Bye."
"Bye, I love you."
"I love you too."
"I love you more."
"That is not possible."
They dragged out their conversation like that for a long time before reluctantly hanging up.
Literally two minutes after the call ended, Virgil got a text.
Lo 🌈💞: Okay Virgil, I know I said I had to go, but I don't care. Dr. Mendel can wait. I'll pretend to be asleep and you can text me, okay? If I stop replying, it's because someone came in.
