Loud noises came from a bar and the streetlight overhead flickered slightly. Terra stood in front of the building with her arms crossed, a slight sheen of sweat on her forehead from the increasing heat. Finally a man came out of the bar and she sighed. "Well, is he in there?"

"Looks like your old man left this morning." The man shrugged. "You going to be alright on your own?"

"Please, he's been gone for a couple days now. I'm fine." Terra looked around the town and knew the other bar was close, but just rolled her shoulders. "Thanks anyway, Joel." She turned away and started walking down the street as Joel disappeared back inside. "Drunk off his ass on a Wednesday night," she muttered to herself, kicking a bottle across the ground. Terra released a long sigh and crossed her arms as she walked, avoiding the gazes of late night wanderers until she caught a glimpse of golden eyes.

They peered out from the darkness of an alleyway, surrounded by a low growling. They blinked out just as shrill scream came from somewhere in the street. The distress call was cut off all together, as sudden as it had come.

"What the hell?" Terra cautiously peered into the alley. There were a couple of drunks down the street, but no one else close to her. Most of the street lamps flickered, leaving her in occasional darkness. Terra edged away from the alley and closer to the street, away from where those golden eyes had been.

The drunks down the street were toasting to one another, clearly oblivious to the nightwalker. A man ran out into the street, hands out before him as he desperately looked over his shoulder. He shouted something to the men around the street lamp and they backed away from him. The man begged the drunks, dropping to his knees before them.

A figure dashed out from around a building and the man on the ground leapt to his feet. The drunks fled and the golden-eyed creature reappeared again, chasing after them. The figure bolted up to the man and seized him, locking him up against the light pole. The attacker jabbed a hand forward and the terrified man screamed out, his voice echoing down the street.

Terra ventured closer, keeping as quiet as possible, as she tried to get a better look at him. Something in her screamed to just run, but with the creature as fast as it was, she figured a loud escape wouldn't be the best plan. Still, something drove her closer. Terra glanced into the alleyway and put her hand to her mouth at the faint outline of torn flesh. She quickly looked away and kept moving.

The man gurgled and sputtered ahead, choking on his own blood. "Where is he?" his attacker demanded and drew his hand away from the man's stomach. The man whimpered and scraped at the other man's arm.

"I don't know man, I don't know!" the man squealed.

"Oh I beg to differ." The attacker drew his face close to the man's, drawing in a deep breath. "I can smell him on you. You were out drinking with him. Not wise of you to leave your weapons behind."

"Please, you wouldn't do this. Come on!" The man looked around, searching for any sign of help.

"Didn't they tell you who I am?" the attacker said. "I'm a little offended. It's fine. I'll find him on my own." The man cried out as his attacker leaned away from him and tightened his grip around the man's neck, fingers digging into his skin.

Terra gasped and dove into an alcove of a shop, peering around the wall to watch. She kept her breathing controlled, but could feel her heart pounding in her chest.

The black animal appeared at the attacker's side and barked at him, drawing his attention for a moment.

"He won't tell us," the attacker said, his voice nearly turning into a growl itself. He turned back to the man and lashed out, ripping his hand across his throat, shredding his neck. The man choked, eyes widening, as he collapsed to the ground. He withered for a few seconds before falling still.

His attacker dropped his hand to his side, his fingertips dripping blood. The animal started to pad away down the street and the other man was about to follow but paused. His head inclined and suddenly he tossed his gaze over his shoulder to Terra's hiding spot.

Terra ducked back into the alcove and closed her eyes. She kept her breathing quiet, hoping he hadn't seen her. That face. She silently prayed it was the darkness and wavering lights tricking her mind as she could have sworn he looked like her history teacher. Terra didn't dare attempt to confirm it and held as still as she possibly could.

A rumbling growl came from around the corner. The attacker's shadow flickered beside Terra's alcove as the street lamps fought to stay on. The lamps went dark and his shadow dissolved. There was a soft bark in the darkness and when the light came back, his shadow did not.
