Wayo POV

I want to kiss him.

"I can't leap over it?"

I control myself and stop the smile watching him look at the tree again disappointedly. It's one of the oldest in the gardens, planted long ago as a sapling by me. He sits on the garden hammock, swinging it slowly in a sad way sitting under the awning. His eyes are sensitive to the bright light I think he will need to wear strong sunglasses for a while when out in the daylight.

"But they can in films Yo..."

I have been trying to explain, but he has so many pre-set ideas about vampires so he questions everything. I need him to understand the basics before we leave, he needs to get comfortable with the new things he is able to do. He expected superhuman strength, speed, vision; it seems I'm disappointing him with the reality.

Vampires are an ancient being, thought to be of legend and myth. Our kind was feared and at one point they even tried to hunt us, thinking it would solve everything. Once we disappeared they moved us to stories told to scare children, and they soon believed them too.

We let it be, willingly moving into the shadows so they could forget us because hiding in plain sight was much easier. Getting a fledgling adjusted to vampire life on the human side wasn't that hard, it was easier for them to fit in then they thought.

"Everything takes time and practice." I tell the disappointed boy. "You will get better."

"What can I do now?"

"You can run faster, your sight will be better more focused and yes you will be a little stronger but not enough to cause alarm to anyone."

"Anything else?"

"Your voice will be sweeter and you will be more radiant than before."

"Sparkle in the sunlight?"

"No."

Why would he want to do that? But he looks happy with the answer, swinging the hammock more.

"Can you leap over it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

He pouts, I want to kiss him.

"I'm older, I have had more time and practice."

"Are all newly turned like me?"

"We call them fledglings, they will be less skilled than you."

"Why?"

He really did like to ask questions, but I had no problems answering them. It was a simple thing, completely unremarkable, sitting on a swinging hammock in the afternoon in the garden, talking. But to me it was precious.

"It depends on the one turning you." I reply. "The older the vampire, the more power they have in their blood."

My age is the reason I need three vampires close by in order to let him stay here, the old laws. On rare occasions, the old blood could...cause trouble.

"That's what makes you immortal, the blood?"

"It's not like you can't hurt a vampire, it's more we are harder to kill." I try to explain.

"Can my blood heal people?" He looks at me seriously.

He was a doctor, I understood what something like that could mean to him.
