"Jon?"
"Jon wake up."
I slowly opened my eyes to see Lin smiling down at me. I looked next to me and panicked not seeing my mother beside me.
"You fell asleep while talking to your mum so she left with visiting hours and all. Anyway, you're leaving today! You get to pick where you'll be staying and restart it all with your new memory."
I smiled to myself holding in a laugh. Lin confusingly smiled.
"What's so funny?"
I quietly sang
"I got a new brain"
Lin rolled his eyes amusingly
"Oh haha. Come on eat your breakfast then we're out of here."
I obliged and quickly finished the cereal causing Lin to give me a wary glance. Yes I was hungry. Yes I wanted to go. Nothing more nothing less.
"Alright then, I'll go get the nurse to get rid of all these tubes and stuff"
He nodded to himself then quickly left the room. He better not walk that fast when I'm with him otherwise I'll be on the floor somewhere three corridors away. I examined my arms remembering what happened to them and saw all the scabs which were part healed, some completely some barely.
"Now you're not gonna tear those up are you?"
"Not now I know where it gets me."
The nurse laughed to herself as she got rid of all the medical stuff attached to me.
"Right, are you ready to stand Sir Groff"
"Nah I'd rather gallop first."
I gave Lin a 'duh' look as he gave me a 'shut up' look. The nurse looked between us amusingly then left.
"Right Mr Sarcastic. Let's get you up."
Lin placed my arm around his shoulders and slowly helped me to my feet, I was a bit weak from blood loss I presume but was able to walk with assistance.
"Jon, you won't need this in the future I hope, but could we get a wheelchair?"
"As long as you don't push it fast then I don't care."
He rolled his eyes and pretended to sigh before laughing and returning with a wheelchair. After sitting back down he wheeled me to the car and drove home.
"So, Tea or Coffee or Water like they told you to?"
I looked at Lin playfully
"Tea."
Lin smiled amusingly to himself before grabbing two mugs.
"Of course."
Returning with the two tea mugs he sat next to me on the sofa.
"So, out of interest, are you in any pain right now?"
"Yup."
"Really?"
"Yup."
"Where?"
"My arms. Hurts all up each side."
"I mean I would give you painkillers but you're not allowed anything till tomorrow."
I grimaced
"Not the tiniest paracetamol pill?"
I tried to use puppy eyes but being a middle aged man I failed miserably to Lin's raucous laughter.
"No you druggie, anyway I'll be in my office working now, put the TV on or something."
He looked at his watch and nodded to himself before walking out the room. Now at least I had the opportunity to try and familiarise myself with the surroundings, maybe I would remember something for all I know. A knock abruptly sounded at the door and immediately I got nervous. Lin probably couldn't hear it through headphones and all. The knock sounded again and my body went rigid; I called Lin to say someone was at the door and heard him walk out the study.
"You're not welcome here."
"I'd like to hear that from your guest please then I'll go."
"Leave."
"Sorry, no can do. Besides, maybe I'll help this 'memory loss' conundrum. I wouldn't want him to forget what I did to him."
"I could call the police."
"This time? You haven't before, funny, are you scared to call them? Afraid if I pipe up about your beloved Stacy?"
"Get. Out."
"I can't do that unless I get in first. Where is my Jon hmm?"
"He's not yours, and never will be. He knows everything he's -"
"- ah, everything you've told him. He doesn't remember experiencing it. Have you asked if he believes you? Maybe he's just being nice and has an entirely different story. Unless, you never asked, did you? You just poured your heart out and -"
"- And that's it. Just leave us alone, please? Haven't you done enough to us two? You barely even know me but you decided to ruin my life and you ruined Jon's of your own free will. You're disgusting."
"You do realise I have already seen Jon? A couple days ago in fact."
"No I was there the whole time -"
"- But you had your family to look after, didn't you? Don't pretend like you're the only one who cares about his recovery."
"Piss off. He's recovering from you don't be that fake asshole."
"Do you know what my favourite part of our visit was?"
"No. And I don't care just leave -"
"- It was when he said my name as I sat next to him. He called me his friend, more than he could say for you. Held my hand, and the best part? He immediately smiled when I walked in. I hadn't even come into contact with him but he smiled knowing I was there."
"He smiled?"
"That's what I said. Remember I'm his friend? He probably doesn't believe your elaborate story anyway so perhaps we could cheer him up."
"Stop."
"Stop what?"
"Just getting in my head like that, just, I, just go?"
"I sense a bit of unsureness, should I stay or leave?"
"I, I -"
"I haven't got all the time in the world Lin, choose now."
"Stay."
"Glad you chose the right decision."
My chest tightened as I heard the front door shut and more footsteps joined Lin's on the wooden floor of the porch.
"I think if we're going to help Jon he shouldn't be overcrowded don't you?"
"I, I know what you're doing. It, It, It won't work."
"Sure, why don't you go down to your study? You probably have lots of work to do in that busy life of yours."
"No I, I -"
"- spare the nonsense talk."
I heard the study door shut and lock as it went silent. Am I going to die? Lin is supposed to protect me, does he not care? My hands began to get shaky as I cuddled myself on the edge of the sofa facing the door. I held my breath as it slowly opened
"Hello Jonathan"
