Ears up. Eyes forward. Legs back. Mind ready.

The nano stared through the small hole in the wall attentively at the human as they began settling themselves for bed. The human was slouched forward with purple baggy eyes. They seemed to have a rougher day at work than usual- or wherever they happened to be that day. The human took a small sip from their cup of water, before sighing heavily. Dragging themselves to their bedroom, they locked the door shut behind them. The nano waited another minute for any sense of noise, and their ears twitched. Once… Twice… Nothing.

That signaled “GO TIME” for the nano, and they dashed out of the walls and to the countertop of the kitchen. They sniffed the air, catching the scent of a few tossed crumbs right by the large coffee machine. The nano’s ears perked up, alongside the slight flash of yellow in their eyes before returning back to a soft, calming grey. They swiftly sprinted across the scent trail, leading them to a small pile of breadcrumbs, each around the size of the nano’s palm. To humans, it wasn’t much of anything. For the nano, it was a day or two's worth of food. The nano sniffed at each of the breadcrumbs for any signs of contamination or poison. Their eyes flashed a quick yellow once again. Safe.

The nano ate half of one of the breadcrumbs right on the spot, before picking up three more and holding them between their two slim arms. The nano was just about to take one more nibble off of one of the breadcrumbs until suddenly, a feeling swelled up in their gut. They froze still like a deer in headlights, listening with twitching ears. Once… Twice… Movement. The nano’s eyes shifted red, turning towards the bedroom door.

The nano instantly made a run for it to the wall, slamming their back against the wood. Their eyes illuminated a soft purple color, shaking at the palms of their hands. Panting heavily, they watched as the human reentered the kitchen, seeming to be looking for something. They stood silently for a minute, skimming the area, before dragging their hands through their ruffled brown hair, going back to their bedroom once again. What was the human looking for? Had they heard something?

The nano swallowed harshly, looking down. They still managed to hold onto all of the crumbs they'd collected. Eyes now grey once again, the nano rushed down the paths in the walls to where the nano slept, being sure to keep normal scavenging times untampered with next time around. Close call. Nearly too close.
