The group of Nanos scattered about their home in a mix of curiosity, fear, and excitement; a human was coming their way for the first time in a long time. Many of the Nanos scurried underneath the dug-up roots of their nearby tree, like the center of their city. Some Nanos leaped beneath bushes and ducked under leaves- most the size of their own minuscule frame.

One Nano, in particular, was curious. Of course, many other Nanos were curious as well. But this Nano specifically had that curiosity aspect to them, however, brushed past the jeopardy of their life at the moment. In short, they were quite clumsy. That’s why he was given the name Shulfid. If you didn’t get the gist of the name already, it was a miscommunication of “stupid” between Nanos hearing it from other humans. They didn’t realize it was an insult, though.

Shulfid manages to forgive himself for his cumbersome mannerism, despite the fact that it gets him into so much trouble. In fact, this trait is something no other Nano has. Shulfid was a side Nano experiment (gone wrong) which had no intention of being released by the professors of the lab. How did he get out? Until the day comes to where he can effectively communicate clearly, we may never know.

Shulfid’s main differentia from the other Nanos is that he has the attribute of wings. Large, lightweight wings. They could easily be snapped like little twigs even by other Nanos, which is surprising for what Shulfid has come to pull off in the past with his inet persona. The best explanation would be that he protects his wings most over anything else. That’s good and bad for many situations, but half of the time it's his wings that manage to save Shulfid’s life.

So where was Shulfid now? Well, off doing something no other Nano would do at the moment. He was stalking the human, watching them through the branches as opposing to the Nanos on the ground. In fact, it was Shulfid who warned the other Nanos that a human was approaching. It was one thing out of few that he managed to understand- he tended to be quite braver than other Nanos.

Shulfid settled himself on one particular branch, right ahead of the direction where the human was walking towards. He blended with the leaves and the branches perfectly, hiding his wings behind a large leaf as they were the one thing that would blow his cover. They had no idea he was there, and he smiled gleefully. Encountering a human from a distance surely wasn’t a first for Shulfid. Up close? That was another story… this one, actually.

The human seemed to have an earbud in one separate ear, oblivious to the surroundings around him and dug up in whatever music he was listening to. He had no idea how many keen little eyes were focused on him.

Shulfid smiled, getting ready to approach the human with bravery as the Nanos watched observantly above- they could see Shulfid in the trees.

Then, a churning feeling swept up Shulfid’s gut, and his eyes flashed a deep red. His eyebrows furrowed, and he pounded on the branch a few times, listening intently towards the sound waves as his sharp ears twitched. Echolocation.

Suddenly, he felt a live response, and the hairs on his skin shot up. It was coming from right behind him, and he flipped himself around and towards the creature. At that exact moment, a branch could be heard snapped, and a large woodland bird flew towards Shulfid with lashed out claws. Shulfid was snatched up and to the sky. He pounced and clawed at the bird’s sharp talons gripped across his body and piercing his delicate wings.

A few of the Nanos below could be heard shouting, attempting to levy themselves up the bark of the tree with no avail. They couldn’t even help Shulfid if they reached the top; he was mid-air in a fight with a wild bird.

Shulfid's teeth bared out as his eyes shifted from a pale white of fear to a deep red of anger. He shouted, biting down on the bird's exposed talons above him, sinking his venom-laced fangs into the bird's flesh and bone. The bird squealed a cry, releasing Shulfid of its claws and plummeting him into a pond below. His wings, wounded from the bird's attack, couldn't break his fall anymore as he fell uncontrollably into the water.
