You looked up at Jameson with a smile, giving him a thumbs up as you walked towards the small, but decent selection of pumpkins to choose from.
Both you and Jameson were good friends, despite your extreme size difference between one another. The factor which brought you two together the most was the sharing of your most unfortunate inherited trait: mute.
In front of you were four- no, five pumpkins placed in front of you. Each one was fit precisely for your miniature size, despite being fake, but carvable pumpkins. It was a pumpkin, nonetheless.
You inspected each and every one, defining them based on their size, shape, color, and every other aspect in between. It wasn't until you stumbled upon the fifth and final pumpkin, you concluded it was the perfect fit. It was an almost perfectly round pumpkin, covered in a neatly saturated orange color; not too big, not too small.
You smiled, turning to Jameson. You pointed at the pumpkin with an appealing emphasis to your motions. He nodded with please, picking up your chosen pumpkin and placing it into the center of the table, beside his chosen pumpkin. It easily towered over yours by numerous numbers.
You pulled out a small toothpick of yours, which was really a splinter that you found, and aimed it towards the pumpkin. Jameson scattered the table in search for his knife and found it off to his side.
Both of you had your process thought out of how you were going to carve your pumpkins: Scoop, sketch, and carve.
Step one, scoop.
You carved out the top of your pumpkin with your miniature splinter, pulling it out of its socket by grabbing the thick stem. You peaked inside only to cock your head to the side. It was vacant of any seeds. Then you remembered: it was a fake pumpkin, no need to worry.
You shrugged, turning to Jameson, who was struggling to pull out the last of his gunk out from his pumpkin. It was finished surprisingly fast, you noted, for how big his pumpkin was. You snickered when a strand of gunk flicked onto his clothing with a followed cringe look. He rolled his eyes at you, flicking the orange string off to the side.
Next step, carving.
Technically it would be sketching what you'd be carving, but you didn't have the tools to do so, so you went straight to carving whilst Jameson began to sketch. The carving took a while for you to complete, so letting you get a head start on your difficult task as Jameson began to catch up quickly on his multiple tasks managed to even out the time you both were completed with your carvings.
You had no idea what Jameson was going to make, and neither did he know what you were going to make either. Being so small, you weren't really much of an artist with the lack of utensils, so you just went with a basic smile; nothing all too extravagant or anything along those lines.
You continued to glance over at Jameson as he drew out his pumpkin's face with haste as you shoved your needle through your pumpkin with all your might. For some reason, he seemed to be in quite a rush, almost out of panic... But he'd let you know if something was really wrong, wouldn't he?
Jameson smiled gleefully as his sketch was completed, seeming satisfied with his face's finished product. You were only halfway done with your carving process, on the other hand, and you were beginning to feel disappointed with how your pumpkin was turning out already.
You heard the quick, soft grazing of metal against the marble counter, mentally noting that Jameson must be grabbing his knife and beginning to carve already. Perhaps, you thought, Jameson may end up completing his pumpkin earlier than yours this year. In previous years, you'd always finished your carvings at the same time somehow, but you couldn't help but wonder why was Jameson suddenly so nimble about it this year.
You completed in carving out the mouth of your pumpkin. All you had to do was push out the mouthpiece to form its opening for the light, and then you just had to do the pumpkin's eyes.
You readied your legs like a galloping horse, and kicked the loose fraction of the pumpkin as hard as you could, forcing the orange piece to topple into its hollow inside. You sighed, realizing that you'd made more work for yourself by pushing the mouth into the pumpkin, now having to push it out the opposite way.
You looked back at Jameson, hoping perhaps you could grab his attention and try to convince him to pull out the piece of pumpkin without making yourself do a big hassle. Instead, Jameson had suddenly dropped his knife, seeming to be looking for something, but his stare didn't look right. You realized that his pumpkin was already finished... Faster than any other year finished.
His presence in the room, which brought joy and energy, suddenly shifted to nothing but ominous air. You felt the strong need to hide, and that was exactly what you did; Your guts manage to take control of your actions without ease almost all the time.
Without thought, you escaped into the first hiding spot your eyes landed on, which was right onside your pumpkin. Sliding through the carved opening of its mouth with ease, you peaked out towards Jameson in a mix of curiosity and fear of what he was doing or whatever was causing you to feel the anxiety you were feeling.
At first, Jameson was looking down at his hand, concealed by his large pumpkin in front of him. His expression was scrunched with pain, trying to resist something that you couldn't tell what. Suddenly, the painful stare faded into a smile. Deep down, you knew this smile was anything but welcoming.
(I was originally going to make this just one part, but just to make sure you guys know I'm not dead -because finishing this may take a minute-, I'm going to leave y'all off on a cliffhanger here. Also, I'm just that much of an asshole. Part two will be coming soon.)
