My POV

My name is Jaden. I have been living in an old tree for years, looking for my family. Traveling acres and acres, and at one point- a mile looking for them. I've come out without a trace. I don't know why I still try anyways.

Oh yeah, you are probably wondering how my family and I got to the size we did... Short story.

It was a normal sunny afternoon at our house. Playing outside, riding bikes, etc.

A speeding car suddenly drove past us all, spraying some kind of chemical gas into our lungs. Whatever this vaccine was, it shrunk us all. We were all separated. Far, far away from each other.

We tried meeting up in the middle of the grass, but it began to rain out of nowhere. We had to run and spread out separate ways. My brother ran to the other side of the street, my sister ran down the sidewalk, my parents ran back to the house, and I ran to the forest.

Being the youngest of the time, I had little chance of survival, but I've miraculously made it through these years of scavenging.

I kept running deep into the forest until I found a young, large, hallow, wealthy tree. This should perfectly fit me inside. Thankfully, no rodents or bugs had infested it yet, so that gave me time to proof it up.

Near this tree was what I could only presume to be an apartment. No one came into the backyard of it where I was, so that gave me no worries of gathering in the day... but I still had to be cautious.

Inside this tree, the walls of wood were rigged, so I smoothed them out. I used the access wood from the walls to make furniture. Bed, chairs, table, you know... the basic stuff.

I use leaves as blankets and multiple soft flower petals as a pillows which for both I have to replace every now and then since they scrunch up and die out.

Food source you ask? Easy. A next-door tree has a large berry bush grown at the very bottom of it that regrows berries all year long. I never eat anything else. That's what I've fended on ever since.

I also use the berries as a source of drink too. Their juice is very delicious to squeeze out. I always contain extra juices from these in jars. Then I simply eat the rest of the berry.

The first day I 'moved into' the tree, I found some kind of sharp tooth from an animal. No wolves or bears live around where I do, right? Well anyways, I took this tooth and used it as a knife. I used a strong, sturdy rose stem to tie the tooth to a thick, short branch. I've used it ever since to slice my berries I collect in half to take their juices.

This tree and I have grown up together ever since I moved in. We've made it through crazy weather, dehydration, nearly hypothermia... nothing has taken us down.

Until today.

There had been men in the backyard a few days back about cutting down a few trees in this area for more space. All trees that were assigned to get cut down had blue tags with numbers placed on them. Mine was number seven.

I had to get everything I could ready, and then I had to move out. I grabbed a two week supply of both berries and berry juice, a couple twigs, and my knife. I was going to set out tomorrow afternoon. I then went to sleep my one last time in the tree.

Next Noon 11:57

It was almost the afternoon, when all of a sudden I heard chainsaws buzzing from outside. They're here.

I grabbed everything I had packed from yesterday and dashed out the bottom of the tree. I walked into the forest, and looked back at my tree one last time.
