District One: Phalene Papillon
I closed my eyes, saving my eyes from the worst of the sudden flash that bathed the arena in light. When I opened them up, the arena had changed almost completely. The abandoned playground had transformed into a maze of mirrors. Audax was standing right in front of me as well.
"In the flesh." Audax said with a smile. Confidence was oozing from him. Spencer had been that confident. He was dead.
Three bodies mimicked his movements. At first I thought they were mirrors reflecting him, but I didn't think that mirrors reflected noise as well.
Picking up on my confusion, Audax decided to speak up. "Oh these are my Mutts. Aren't they handsome?"
A solid beam of light fired from the weapons carried by Audax and his clones. I ducked low to the ground, letting the lasers pass over me. I looked at the weapons carried by the Mutts. They looked like the weapons the Peacekeeper trainees trained with, guns. I had never laid a finger on one. Maybe if I had, I would have known how to disable the weapons and save myself a little trouble.
The lasers ricocheted randomly around the mirror maze. I wondered if they would ever stop.
I took my axe and threw it at the nearest Audax. When I had ducked, they had moved around and I no longer had any idea of which was real and which was not. Thankfully, the one I threw my axe at was one of the Mutts. The Mutt itself dissolved into nothingness, it's weapon too. I could have used that. It offered a quick and painless death, and had to have been fairly easy to use. The mirror behind the Mutt shattered.
Due to the multitude of lasers flying around, more than could possibly have been shot from the Mutts attacking me, I guessed that everyone else was dealing with these Mutts too. The poor maze that Audax had constructed would be destroyed in no time with everyone throwing weapons at things that dissolved into nothingness when hit.
I ran over and picked up the axe I threw. Audax and his Mutts raised the guns in sync again. It reminded me of a barbershop quartet, missing a member of course. There were still a few of the older men who did it for fun. Now all the entertainers are from the Capitol. I could only imagine the song that they would be singing.
'Baby please don't go, baby please don't move. I just need one more chance baby, one more chance, to kill you with my laser baby. Baby please don't go.'
I was do absorbed in the song that they weren't singing, that I almost missed the lasers firing at me. I ducked again, and threw my axe at the closest Audax. Once again, the Mutt dissolved into nothingness. Unfortunately, standing behind this Mutt wasn't a mirror, but Josie.
Dang, I said it would be a shame when she died. On the bright side, her cannon fired almost immediately so it couldn't have been too painful. I ran over to her body. Now it was down to just Audax and one of his clones. I scooped up my axe, as well as Josie's. it wasn't like she was going to be using it any time soon.
The two clones started to walk over to me, and as I backed into my reflection, I realized why Josie didn't try to dodge my axe. This was a dead end. I was trapped. The two Audax's readied to shoot the guns again. I interrupted them, throwing both of the axes I had at once. Hopefully I wouldn't kill the real Audax. That would be very bad. Thankfully, one of the Audax's dissolved into nothing, letting my axe fly into one of the mirrors, while my second axe bounced off of the real Audax, who soon vanished as well.
I just had one question. Where was the exit to this maze?
