Enver plunged the knife deep into Parabella's heart.

He felt it thump once,  twice and then a third exhausting time before... nothing. Silence -  absolute silence filled the arena. Enver listened hard, for a bird, for  breeze... for a breath but there was nothing. Then, he counted them off  on his fingers... Orchard had been first to succumb to his numb rage,  then Phalene had felt his cold fingers snap her neck then... just this  second, he had murdered Parabella.

"Who is left?" he thought out loud - his voice echoing eerily around him. "Who's left?"

No one, his conscious answered. You are alone.

It took his mind all of  five seconds to make the link. If he was alone, the last one standing,  then he had won. Enver was the victor. So... why wasn't he happy? Enver  looked around the desolate place, the blood stained grass, the burnt  trees and forgotten buildings. The dense air, the grey clouds and broken  trees - it was so ugly looking, yet somehow it spoke to Enver. It made  him feel like he knew this place, like it was his home.

Enver looked down at his  blood stained hands and clothes before feeling cold rain drops on his  skin. The canon sounds, cracking in the air like the snapping of old  timber. That was it - that was the symbol... Enver had really done it.  His whole body surged as it begged him to give into the emotions he had  bubbling under the surface; there were so many competing for freedom, it  made Enver's head hurt.

"Congratulations!" The  voice made Enver jump as he looked up in the sky to see Fillius smiling  down at him. It made him feel uncomfortable, like a hungry lion glaring  down at the helpless prey. The rain got heavier as he spoke again. "Let  us all give a big hand of applause to our victor! Enver Code from  Distirct Three!"

The rain got heavier.

"Some of you may be  curious as to why our victor has not yet been pulled from the arena."  Enver got to his feet now, picking up the gun Parabella had dropped and  shoving it deep under his belt. Actually, he had been thinking that -  Enver knew the process backwards. You kill, the canon goes off, you win,  the anthem plays and then you leave. Why had half of that not yet  happened? "Don't worry, there's a perfectly valid explaination."

By the time Enver had  walked away from the body of Parabella, Fillus was on screen with an  enevelope in his hand. "As a reminder that every citizen of Panem is at  the mercy of the Capitol, this year, our Gamemakers may do as they  please, regarless of any preconceived notion in your mind. This was the  twist, correct?"

No, thought Enver, allready seeing where this was going. NO!

Fillius continued.  "Already we've played with gravity, teleportation and hallucination.  Tested you even before your training and interviews... but there is  still one twist to come; the final twist, if you will. As a reminder  that the capitol did not have to extend it's generosity to keep the  districts alive, the victor of these games will NOT exit the arena  alive."

Enver felt his body tare in two as those words left Fillius' mouth.

His machine went crazy,  roaring and bellowing in pure unadultared rage. He had never invoced  such a strong reaction from his machine before but now - it was livid.  How DARE the Gamemakers take away glory from the mechanics? How dare  they rip away the chance for logic to rein over stupid human emotions?  His robotic eye turned red as his mechanical hand clenched into a fist  and pulled at his own hair.

However... his other  half - his human side - for the first time since the games began, was  calm. While the left side of his body torn itself apart, the right side  reamined a picture of serenity. He blinked a few times as that  information set in and felt a sense of gratitude break free inside him.

Enver was a victor, but  why had he the right to leave? He was a murderer, a theif, and cold  hearted killer - why shoul he be hailed? Enver smiled up at Fillius - he  saw this as his second chance. He could stay here with those he had  killed until he, himself, died and then the world would forget him but  Enver would die knwing he had fallen witht he commrades brave enough to  face him.

Lightening breaks across  the inky black sky floowed quickly by thunder. Enver does not move  though - he cannot. One half too enraged to form a thought and the other  too numb to understand the word movemement let alone enact it. For the  first time, Enver can think without his mechanic mind taking over, for  once his mind his human and his.

Enver wonders how he  will die. Will the Gamemakers force the death of his hallucintion? Will  they pump out some indestructable beast? Re-awaken the dead tributes and  allow them to tear him limb from limb?

Does it matter? his human mind thought. You're going to die here. Isn't that prize enough?

"NO!" bellowed his robotics. Enver ignored it and remained focus on this feeling of humanity.

"I feel scared," he  thought out loud and although the statement was a dark one - he said it  with a happy inflection. He actually felt something - this is what this  arena had done for him... yes.. this Arena had been kind to Enver. So,  so kind. He was pleased to die here, it would make him an equal, he  would be just like all the other normal people. Here, Enver would be  accepted... and really, that was all he ever wanted.

Ignoring his left side  now taring itself to bits, Enver smiled and looked around him. Where was  this death? He was waiting - willingly. Enjoying the rain on his skin,  Enver turned and-

The rain stopped - laughter replaces it.

"Oh relax! We wouldn't actualy do that-"

Enver's eyes widen. "W-What? N...No... no you can't. You can't go back on your promise. You-"

"We just thought it  would be amusing to see your reaction. Quite the show you gave us by the  way. Congratulations!" The Anthem began to play, drowining out Envers  horrified pleas. He felt panic - pure panic. He couldn't go back to the  real world, he couldn't - he couldn't! He would be judged again and  ridiculed and shown as different.

The Hovercraft arrived -  people piled out and took Enver by the arms, congratulating him and  taking him toward the ship. He wanted to fight back but couldn't, he  didn't believe they would do this to him... they wouldn't play with his  emotions that way.

The next thing he knew,  he was in the craft - people were praising him and he was now no longer  in the areana but above it... leaving it forever. No, he thought. It was  so certain, so absolute - he knew what he had to do. "No," he said.

"Excuse me?"

"No," he repeated,  louder this time. Enver felt the gun in his hand, the one he had long  forgotten about, and checked it was loaded. One bullet - that was all he  would need. Getting to his feet, Enver walked to the open door of the  hover craft.

"What are you doing?" asked one of the people who had come to collect him.

Enver smiled and tears - real tears - fell from his eyes as he spoke.

"I'm going home." He  raised the gun to the side of his head, his final thought being that he  hoped he had done his mother proud. Enver took a deep breath and gave  himself to the dark.

BANG!

Enver - like a fallen angel - fell to his home.

Enver the Victor, with his last breath, felt.
