Abnegation - Austin Hawke
Is it ridiculous that all I can think about as I stand in the middle of the Abnegation banquet is that this first day of my life that I've spent without my sister? I feel the divide like it's a real thing, her absence is a phantom ache in my chest. It's disorienting to turn around to ask her if she thinks this is as lame as I do, only to realize over and over that she's not there.
But this was my choice.
This is what I chose.
I'm alone of course, nobody wants to sit with the girl with the piercings and blue highlights. Nobody wants to sit with the girl that has tattoos. The girl from Dauntless. I've never felt so out of place, even though I'm wearing grey robes just like everyone else.
Stop, I think with a grimace, just stop. These are selfish, self-centered thoughts. I may not have been born a Stiff but I'm here to be one. May as well start now. I'm Austin Hawke, I'm not afraid of anything. Especially not a group of Stiffs. I can be a part of this...
I stare at the plate on my lap. It's remarkably plain compared to what we ate back home. Unseasoned chicken, warm bread, peas. Suddenly I miss chocolate cake more than Aidan. Hey, Dauntless cake was delicious. But now I have peas. Oh well...
"Scuse me? Hi. You looked upset so I'm going to sit with you okay?"
I look up from my feet and see a round-faced girl with jet black hair looking down at me with a shy smile. I wrack my brain for her name; she's another initiate. Though she's a Stiff to the core, she was born into this. I don't say anything to her, I just gesture for her to sit.
She's quiet as she chatters to me, telling me her name and about how she's glad there are some transfers into Abnegation and so on and so for. I tune her out after a while. Overly kind people always make me feel sick, simply because I'm not one of them. Aidan was though. She was nicer than me. The girl- I've learned her name is Kellie with an 'ie' not a 'y' as she so clearly pointed out- doesn't seem to realize that I'm not listening to her so I keep pretending that I am.
"Can you spare some food? Please?" I look up and almost gasp when I see a factionless man hovering over me, staring at my untouched plate of food with pleading eyes. A dribble of drool is hanging out of the corner of his mouth.
I've never seen the factionless up close. They never came near the Dauntless compound, we weren't kind to them. They stayed over near Abnegation sector. I expected them to be old and crusty and gross with only a few teeth. But this man is just dirty, scared looking and about my father's age. My throat feels right as I look up at him.
"Um..." I stammer, staring at my plate. Begging is illegal...
The man looks at me pleadingly. And guilt starts to gnaw at my heart. What if this guy dies because I don't give him food? What if he gets arrested for going to someone else if I say no? What if the Abnegation frown on me for being selfish? But the law...
I blink. Since when have I regarded the law about anything? I've never been afraid to break rules even without a good cause, why should I be afraid now? I may be wearing grey but I'm still a Dauntless at heart. And Dauntless aren't afraid of anything. Not even breaking the rules.
"Of course sir. You can have my plate." I smile kindly at the man, it's a forced smile but it's not like he'll notice, and hand him my plate. Good thing I'm not a pig; at least he has an overflowing plate.
The man looks at me greatfully before scrambling away. Kellie just starts chattering again like nothing ever happened and I go back to not listening. I can't stop thinking about that guy. I wonder why the man was factionless. What did he do? Does he have a family? I don't know why but it's bothering me.
