District One: Phalene Papillon

I listened intently to  Audax ramble on, as intently as possible when calliope music is playing  so loud I want to rip my own head off. I ducked quickly, keeping a  sudden jet of water from doing that for me. I turned to see what it had  hit, to find the cotton candy machine whirling around. Anybody could  tell where the water hit, even if they were normal sized. The wet,  crystalline sugar sharply contrasted the dry, fluffy candy that spun in  the rest of the machine. It was a color I didn't recognize though:  orange. I had never seen orange cotton candy before.

"Oh and if you do get sucked into the cotton candy," Audax said. "Try a bite! It's mango flavored, my treat."

What was his problem  with mangos anyways? Maybe if I bathed in the mango flavoring for the  cotton candy, Audax would sponsor me or something. I didn't know about  that, but I did know that the carnival games that once seemed a little  creepy, were now downright terrifying.

I might as well start  looking for someone to kill. There were only five other tributes in this  arena. I was sure that I could narrow the playing field a little bit.

Someone tapped my shoulder. I leapt up in surprise, swinging my axe behind me.

"Shit!" I heard the  person behind me. I could tell my axe didn't hit them, instead only  cutting down some of the grass around us. "Gosh Phalene, if you wanted  to break off the alliance you could have told me." He joked. It was  Fabron.

"Sorry Fabron, I'm  just a little jumpy." I sighed. "I just don't want to be stabbed in the  back. You know?" I said, remembering the massive scar on Mirror Me's  back.

"Yeah, I get it." He  said. "Oh and I thought of a place where we can hide." Without even  waiting for me to reply he continued. "Those milk bottles are always  glued down or something, so if normal sized humans can't knock them  over, I doubt we can either."

"Let's get rid of  the other tributes first. I just want to get out of here as fast as I  can." I said. I wondered if Glitz was still with my parents. There were  several Capitol families wanting to adopt her. Who could blame them? She  was the cutest little Bijon Frise. Maybe if I won I would get to keep  her.

"They're probably all hiding." Fabron argued.

"Then we can find them!" I replied.

Fabron started to say something, but our argument was interrupted by an ear-piercing shriek.

"Found one." I replied with a smile. Fabron frowned.

I turned to locate  the scream. It was definitely coming from one of the games, but I wasn't  sure which one. I scanned the machines until I saw a little blonde head  bobbing up and down. "There," I pointed. "The one with the hammer."

"I think that one's a little big for me, Phalene." Fabron said.

I glared at him. "I  forgot, you're used to handling tiny tools. That's where the tribute  is." I ran over to the machine. It was probably no more than thirty  yards or so, but it felt like an eternity, now that the arena had grown  around us.

When I finally made  it, the little girl was crying. For some reason, the boy from Seven was  standing by her. Now I could see why she was crying. She must have tried  to go into the hole, and the mole came up to greet her. Now she was  stuck in the hole.

I prepared myself to  throw my axe at the boy, then stopped. Mirror Me had said something  about how painful death actually was. Was I really that mean? I froze  for a second, just enough time for Fabron to catch up to me and hammer  the boy from Seven to death.
