Abnegation

In the Abnegation  compound, things are peaceful; speaking too loudly would only focus  attention on themselves, which would be self-indulgent. Yet when  Penelope enters the room, there still seems to be a considerable hush in  the air, mixing in with the nerves and anticipation. "There are two  initiates who will be leaving us today," she says. "They are Kellie Carrington and Stuart Banachali."

The pair stand up and  head out the door, looking down. As soon as they have left the room,  Penelope clears her throat. "As you may know, one of the abilities we  most value is listening. Which is why today, we have brought in Hektor,  who will tell each of you his story. He will tell me if anybody shows  behaviour unworthy of the Abnegation, so I recommend watching  yourselves."

An old man walks in, wrinkled and crack. He needs a cane to walk, so Penelope offers her arm and guides him.

As for you, your job is to listen.

Amity:

As opposed to the  Abnegation compound, the Amity one is bursting with noise. Initiates  sit, chatting happily and playing hand games as usual, but there is a  certain restrain in them; fear. "It is my great sadness to announce that  one of you will be leaving us," says Aimee, tears practically flowing  down her cheeks. The Amity don't like goodbyes. "Frank Rudnick, please pack your bags."

The boy nods and leaves,  and Aimee begins to speak again. "As I'm sure you know, a key part of  our society is forgiveness. How can we be peaceful if we do not  acknowledge there has been a conflict and put it behind us? Now, I  expect today will be difficult, but I have faith in you all. I am  certain you will succeed."

And then They walk in.

- In front of you stands  the person who has hurt you the worst. They will explain their version  of the story, and you are to find it in you to forgive them.

Candor:

In the Merciless Mart,  the Candors sit, discussing how nervous they are; it'd be an untruth to  deny their fear, and there's no humiliation in something they all feel,  anyways. "It is my duty to announce the departure of one of our  initiates," says Matt. "Gabriel Truth has seen fit to leave us and has decided to live among the factionless."

A hushed murmur falls  over the crowd, but they are silent as soon as Matt clears his throat.  "Our faction values honesty above everything else," he reminds the  initiates. "We have no secrets. However, in order to learn to keep no  secrets from each other, we must clear ourselves from every secret we  currently hold."

He hands you a serum. "Drink," he says. "Drink, and then speak everything."

- You have been given  the famous Candor truth serum. Now, you sit on a chair surrounded by  fellow initiates and faction members, and all your secrets, no matter  how humiliating come straight out of your mouth.

Dauntless:

The relieved silence  that echoes throughout the Dauntless compound doesn't last very long,  but the initiates still break character and it is there; none of them  are leaving. They are safe. "Follow me," says Merida.

The crowd follows the  girl down to the training room, where they have set up a simulation of  some kind. "Today, we will be evaluating your response to fear," she  says. "You will be trapped in a landscape of your deepest terrors, and  you will not be able to progress until you suppress the fear.  Understood?"

As they nod, the initiates are tapped with the transmitter. The simulation has begun.

- Go through your fear  landscape, which is a collection of your fears. There must be at least  four, and they might not always be straightforward. To progress, you  must suppress the fear in some way.

Erudite:

Contrary to the  Dauntless, there is no relief amongst the Erudite upon hearing that they  are safe; none of them thought they could possibly be sent home,  anyways. "Today is a very special day," states Minerva. "Today, you will  be allowed to join us in the labs, so hurry up and join us down there."

Instantly, the initiates head down to the lab, where Minerva is working on the simulation serum.

"Remember," she says, "any error will result in massive punishment. Do not waste our trust."
