"If you can cut the vegetables."

"Yes of course." I take the knife from here and start cutting the peppers.

"So, Tell something about yourself, Rose. Where are you from. What is your family like?." Shawn his mother says as she checks on the turkey in the oven.

"Umm well I am born and raised in the Netherlands. In a village nearby Amsterdam. My upbringing was strictly but loving."- that is no lie. Like I said before, we weren't always the cold and distant family we are today. "I spend the biggest part of my childhood in the stables with horses. It was a good upbringing, I guess."

"Sounds indeed very peaceful."- I smile at her and continues with cutting the veggies. "And what about your family? Shawn told me that you have a little sister as well." I wonder what Shawn has told about me already. I am more curious about what he has told me about my sudden arrival here in Toronto.

"Yes, I have. Lily is her name."- I do feel bad that I left my sister behind. I shouldn't have done that. I should call her later and see what she is doing now my parents have left. I hope that she isn't on her own. "Well, yeah my family... umm my dad works for the government and my mother is a stay at home mom."

"Sounds like a traditional family."

"Yes, I guess we are."

"Didn't they mind that you flew to Toronto then? On Christmas Eve?."

"I don't think so. My family is a little bit different than yours."

"How come?."

"Umm..."- yeah how am I going to explain this without making them sound so bad? "They are a little bit more strict and cold, I guess. Nothing like your family. You can see the love you have for each other all around."

"O thank you dear. I thought that it was the same in every family."

"No, not really. I think you guys are very fortunate."

"Yes, I think so too."- they don't know how special it is what they have with each other. I wish that my family had only 10% of what Shawn his family has. "So, tell me about how you ended up in New York."

After a hour or so, Karen and I are laughing like we have known each other for years. She is honestly the nicest person I have ever met.
She has been telling embarrassing stories about Shawn his childhood.

"Looks like you two have fun." I look at the entrance where Shawn is standing with his arms crossed and a faint smile on his face.

"Yes, we do. It's nice to finally have someone who also likes cooking. It's to have some girl quality time."

"And your embarrassing childhood stories are also a good topic for laughter."

"Mom... really." He whines as he walk further into the kitchen.

I chuckle softly as I swirl around in the bowl to make a little dip sauce. "What are you laughing about." Shawn comes up behind me and place his hands on both sides of my body on the kitchen counter.

"You were so cute when you were a child."

"Only when I was a child?." He mumbles as he bury his face in my neck and wraps his arms tightly around my body.

"Yeah. I love your little bowl cut." I reach out to his head and scratches his scalp loving.

I turn my head and see Shawn his mother smiling at us with a warm smile on her face before she walks out of the kitchen with the turkey.

"Where are your heels?." He caress my covered thigh as he press a light kiss against my neck.

"Your mother was afraid that I was going to break my ankles. So, I kicked them off."
