I sighed and slumped down on my couch. My parents weren't home yet, so I had the place to myself. I live in the ghetto parts of Talladega, Alabama. My house is real small, and as if the city wasn't already dangerous enough, my neighborhood always had a murder or a fight or some other crap going on. Murders weren't very often, but they happened. I turned on the TV and flipped through channels. I came across The Swan and decided to watch that. Grace Kelly was super pretty. Sometimes I wished I looked like her. Younger though, obviously. I'm fifteen.
People typically said I was pretty how I am. I don't mean to sound like those girls who know they're pretty and pretend they're not. I just like Grace Kelly. I have super long red-ish auburn hair. My family can't really afford hairstylists, and I like long hair, so I don't cut if often. My face is lightly brushed with freckles over the bridge of my nose. I have bright green eyes. A lot of people said if they looked like me, there would be so many blouses with colors to complement my hair or eyes that they'd wear. I typically just wear a regular T-shirt, jeans, and black converse. I do have a pair of expensive leather boots I stole, but I didn't want to ruin them, so I don't wear them too often.
I was happy it was finally the weekend. I need a break from dumb rules and dumb teachers and dumb students.
The doorknob started to move and I sighed. My parents were home. They were alcoholics and illegally sold alcohol to people for money. I woulda told the authorities, but I have no where to go except across America to other family members, which I didn't plan on doing anytime soon. They didn't really beat me unless they were completely wasted and I wasn't minding my own business. I was typically never home anyway. I usually just roamed town and stayed with school friends. I wish they would just find actual jobs but they were too into their alcohol to listen to me. I planned on getting a job by my next birthday.
The door opened and they entered. The room reeked of alcohol and cigarettes. I used to smoke, but I didn't want to get lung cancer or anything, so I quit. I probably wouldn't be able to hold down a smoke anymore.
"How was 'work'?" I asked, using my fingers for quotations.
My dad looked at me and raised an eyebrow. "Hi, Emma. Wasn't expecting you to be home." He said.
I rolled my eyes. They weren't expecting me, or they didn't care enough to think I live here too.
My mom caught my sarcastic gesture and pointed at me. "Don't you roll your eyes are your father!" She said.
I didn't care too much about what she said, because I had noticed this is the first time in about a month they hadn't come home fighting or drunk. Or both. Most of the time if they were fighting and I was around, they would see me and fight over me. When my dad is drunk, he thinks because I look more like my mom, that I'm not his. Really, he's just too drunk to understand, sometimes children look more like one parent than the other. I have some of his qualities though.
I have his eyes. Mine are a brighter green, probably because I'm younger. I also have a bit of his body. We're both pale and lanky. My mom is kinda skinny too, but my dad and I take the cake. Other then that, I have my mom's face and my mom's hair. I have neither of their personalities. They're both dull and lifeless and mean. I consider myself fairly nice, but I also don't take crap. I'm also a hood. I steal a lot of things. I don't typically steal valuable things, (besides those boots). I only really steal food and small things I find I can benefit from. I have money I've saved up from hustling people or stealing from my parents, but I have it saved for emergencies only.
