She hated heart for having to fall for the one boy she knew was way out of her league. Scratch that, no boy would ever like her. But Eunji tried her best to ignore the simmering yearning for a partner. Selling to herself that she needed to focus on her studies, not boys who would turn out to have an expiration date.
Eunji had gone all her years in college without interacting with anyone, not one person at all. With being mute and all, she found it quite easy to do so. She didn't talk to anyone and no one bothered to talk to her. But once senior year hit, she began to regret casting herself away from everyone.
From a life of being unwanted, she was easily intimidated by other human beings. But who could really blame her? Right at birth her parents gave her up for adoption, embarrassed at the fact she would never be able to speak. After being raised in foster care where she was mercilessly tormented by the other kids for being mute, Eunji was found by a man and woman who had so kindly adopted her when she was thirteen.
She had grown to love her adopted family and they loved her well. Eomma had always worried about her not being able to socialize with other kids, but Eunji had somehow convinced her that she was doing just fine on her own. But she wasn't fine. She wasn't fine to the point where she didn't even realize until it was probably too late.
Eunji fully blamed her naive heart for having a crush on the college campus' kingka. Literally every girl fell for his slightly tousled black hair, brown doe eyes, smooth complexion, and that dang adorable smile of his. Unfortunately Eunji found herself no better than the rest of them. But at least she was smart enough to not chase after him like they all did. She wasn't going to throw her heart onto the field only for it to be brutally trampled over.
"Oh my gosh there's going to be a dance at the end of the year!" One of the girls squealed, looking at her phone.
Eunji peered up from her book. A dance? What was this, high school? Why were they having a dance?
"Ah I hope Jungkookie asks me to the dance! It would be a dream come true!" One girl said.
Her friend beside her pushed her shoulder, "Aniya! He's obviously going to ask me out, I'm the prettiest out of all the both of you combined!"
Eunji rolled her eyes at their behavior. She couldn't help but feel second hand embarrassment for them. Everyone knew that Jeon Jungkook rejected every girl who asked him out. Always seeing him surrounded by his friends, Eunji had yet to see him accept any girl's confession. That only lowered her confidence of ever being noticed by him.
One day she was at the cafe near school, studying for some exam as she always did after classes. Eunji played her normal routine of ordering a small cup of mocha gold milk coffee, settling herself off to a single person table at the far corner near the cafe's window, and spent her nose in the books for the next few hours. But only today was different, today the last person Eunji came into the cafe. Jeon Jungkook of course, and it just had to be on one of her worst days.
[Flashback]
Eunji scrambled up trying to gather her laptop off the floor when the campus queenka, Soo Hi knocked it out of her arms rather rudely.
"Speak up, you pabo!" She smacked the poor girl's head, causing her to fall onto the ground just like her laptop did.
Her friends laughed haughtily, Soo Hi's confidence grew. "Oops I forgot, you can't."
Humiliation hit Eunji hard, seeing everyone who passed by look at her with either pity or disgust. What sin has she committed to deserve this treatment? Eunji picked up the laptop, knowing it was probably broken now.
