Eunji hummed the melody of an unfamiliar tune as she poured cake batter into the cake pan. She had woken up especially early this morning so she would be able to make this cake. Everything was muscle memory for her, measuring the ingredients, preheating the oven, and thoroughly mixing the wet and dry ingredients together with a silicone spatula. Now that the batter was resting peacefully in the pan, Eunji carefully picked it up and slid it into the oven.
She hoped that Jin Oppa would like this cake, she had put so much effort into. Her older brother, who was also the best cook she knew, was very fussy when it came to her cooking. He would always worry about her chopping a finger or possibly burning something. She was grateful for him trying to "protect" her, but she was twenty three now. Jin Oppa had taught her well enough and no longer needed his guidance. Besides, it was his birthday. She wanted to make this all on her own.
Eunji glanced at the clock. Jungkook should be here soon with the balloons. He would come, and she would have already finished decorating Jin Oppa's cake with the cream she had made prior. Oh she hoped that Jungkook wouldn't be late. She needed everything to be perfect today.
The doorbell finally rang just as Eunji had taken the freshly baked cake out of the oven. She set the cake on the counter to cool off before speed walking to answer the door. She was already smiling at the thought of seeing her boyfriend's cute face. She opened the door, and she was not let down.
"Jungkook-ah!" She gave him a brief hug and a kiss on the cheek. When she pulled away, Jungkook wasn't smiling as she had expected him to be.
"Jagi..." He said in a solemn voice. Why did he sound so sad?
"Jungkook-ah, where are the balloons for Jin Oppa?" She asked, still smiling. "Did they not have anymore?"
"Jagi..." He tried to speak, but didn't know what to say.
Well it was okay, no balloons weren't the end of the world. She was sure Jin Oppa wouldn't be too upset.
"It's okay. I just finished the cake," She told him, locking the door behind him. "Take off your shoes, then you can help me decorate it."
"Eunji-yah, do...do you really not remember?" Jungkook asked. His eyes were full of guilt, as if he felt bad for her. What reason would he have to feel bad for her?
Her smile dropped, "What's wrong? Why do you look so sad Jungkook-ah?"
When Jungkook didn't respond, she began to feel worried.
She grabbed his hand, "D-did I do something? Is that why you're upset? Whatever I-"
"Jagi, that's not it," He said, shaking his head. "I'm not upset with you."
"Then what is it?" She asked, feeling even more on edge now.
Jungkook's eyes filled with tears, "Jagiya, Jin Hyung...he's gone. He p-passed away a year ago."
Her hand released his, dropping to her side. Then all the memories came back, and Eunji came back to reality. Jin Oppa wasn't here anymore. She must've wanted him to still be with her so badly, that her mind forgot what had happened last year.
"Eunji-yah, are you okay?" Jungkook asked quietly, putting his hand on her shoulder. "I-I know it's hard."
Eunji nodded, "I-I'm fine. I'm fine."
She was lying of course. How could anyone be okay in this type of situation? Jungkook knew this, and didn't hesitate to pull the girl into a comforting embrace. Eunji closed her eyes, letting him comfort her.
"Should we go visit him?" Jungkook suggested after, a few minutes of silence.
Eunji pulled away and gave him a grateful smile, "N-ne. That would be good."
Eunji quickly changed into black attire, prepared to go see her brother. Before she left, she threw the cake in the garbage. She had poured all her love into his cake, but he wouldn't be able to eat it. What was the point in keeping it now?
Jungkook held her hand the whole way, as he drove to the cemetery. She hadn't cried yet, so that was a good sign. He could never get the memory of her heartbroken sobs out of his head. Eunji had been through so much pain, she didn't deserve to lose her brother. Jungkook loved his Hyung, who had trusted him to love Eunji just as much as he did. He had to be grateful, because she would have died if it weren't for him.
"Hi Jin Hyung," He said, holding Eunji's hand tightly as they approached his grave.
A small smile appeared on her face, seeing her brother's photo. He looked handsome as always, with those broad shoulders of his. Eunji bent down to place the flowers beside his grave. She didn't stand back up, as her eyes kept rereading the words on his grave stone.
Kim Seokjin 1992-2019 - A kind, hard working man who was a loving son and brother. May his soul rest peacefully.
"Have you been well, Oppa?" She asked, in a calm and quiet tone. "I don't think you'd be lonely in Heaven."
Eunji looked away for a second and bit her lip. That was when Jungkook knelt down next to her, placing a hand on her back.
"It's okay, let it out," he told her. Hearing him, she slowly brought herself to look at his photo again.
"I-I'm sorry," She said, tears immediately coming to her eyes. "I-I'm sorry Oppa. It should've been me, not you."
She covered her mouth, as a sob escaped, "I miss you. Oppa I miss you much."
She missed everything about him. She missed his handsome face, his delicious food, his stupid dad jokes, and his forehead kisses. She missed when he would sing her to sleep, and she missed when he would scold Jungkook for teasing him. Everything, she wanted so badly for him to still be here, and not buried under the dirt.
"I'm so sorry," She repeated. "I wish I could be strong, but I'm not."
Not being able to hold it in anymore, she cried her heart out. Jungkook was there to hold her as she grieved, just as he did at the hospital and the funeral. He didn't even realize that he was crying too. He really hated seeing her like this.
"Remember Eunji-yah," he whispers softly, once she calmed down. "Jin Hyung, is still here. He's in your heart and mine."
Her now red eyes met Jungkook's teary eyes. She knew that he was just as heartbroken as she was. Jin Oppa was his best friend after all. Yet he still managed to smile...for her.
She used all her strength to give him a smile back, "Yes. He is in our hearts."
Forever in our hearts.
