Chapter 1: A Gamer's Heartbreak

The sound of birds buzzed in my ears as I walked the dirt-paved path of my driveway in Los Angeles, California. The wind blew my half-shaved hair wildly, its black and teal streaks flowing in my face every now and then. The single silver strip by my right eye shined like sun itself, the freshly dyed glitter within the color nearly blinded me every now and then and I would have to tuck it behind my ear. 

My name is Koda. I'm 25 and, like I said before, I live in LA. I bunk with my four closest friends in one house and we couldn't be happier to have each other. But for Sage.... it's a different story. We really are pretty much all she has left, but I won't get into that now. 

I live in a large, western cabin house with 8 bedrooms-- three of which are used as guest rooms. A winding balcony wraps around one side of the house, overlooking the lower perched civilization at the base of the large mountainous hill on which we live. There's a pool in the backyard with a group of life-sized concrete horse statues modeled to look as if they are running through the water. 

Trees line the house on three sides, nearly safeguarding it with the protection of the wilderness that surrounded us almost completely. The 'driveway' was a long dirt path that veered from the road, venturing deep into the woods. The path was about half a mile long and only seemed like a hunting trail. If I'm honest though, no one can come in the woods within a 5 mile radius from the house and the half mile wooded area from the main road-- this land is private.
