Chapter 1: Lost Without You

Magnus hadn't left his living room since he got home. He hadn't slept at all last night, and he didn't eat anything.

He didn't even want to. All he could think about was what had happened last night. The battle flashed through his mind, Alec running into the burning Institute to save him, Alec laying on the floor as Jonathan pulled the blade out. Alec saying his last words, "I love you, Magnus."

He blinked back the tears that had welled up in his eyes. He was still wearing his clothes from last night. Alec's blood was all over them. He snapped his fingers into dark pants and a dark long-sleeved shirt.

He walked out of the apartment. Maybe going on a walk would clear his mind a little. The streets of New York weren't as busy as they normally were, which was just find by Magnus.

As he walked, memories passed through his head. He didn't know where he was going. He just walked. Eventually, he found himself standing in front of the giant metal 'Love' sign, where people put the locks to show their eternal love for each other.

There was still a scorch mark on the floor where Magnus had destroyed Alec's lock.

Magnus thought that breakup was the worst thing that could happen between them. And now Alec was gone. Forever.

He turned away from the metal word, tears running down his face. He'd probably never cried this much over something before. Not even when George had died in war.

But Alec, he was different. He had been the angel's gift to this world, strong, sweet, passionate, and so much more. It was rare to find somebody like that, especially a Shadowhunter.

Magnus pulled his hood over his head and started to run down the street. He couldn't do this. It brought back too many memories.

There was the ice cream cart where they had gotten Madzie icecream.

"You know, you're going to be a great dad." He could almost hear Alec say. "What? You don't think so?"

He kept running. This time, he didn't stop until he reached his apartment. It felt empty without Alec there. Just a few days ago, Alec had been here, dancing in the kitchen with him. It was crazy how quickly someone could ruin your life, take everything you love away from you.

Jace's POV

When Alec had died, Jace had gone on lockdown mode. He had been out hunting demons all day, alone. He didn't want to talk to anyone. He didn't want to face reality. But he knew that Alec was gone, and he wasn't coming back.

He felt so empty inside. Normally he could feel Alec there, his feelings, and sometimes even his thoughts. Now that they were gone, it was like a part of him was missing.

When your parabatai dies, a part of you dies too. Now Jace knew what they meant by that.

"Jace." Isabelle's voice rang through the small alley he stood in.

He turned around to face her. She was wearing jeans and a red long sleeve shirt. Not her style at all.

"You've been out here since like three this morning. It's already four o'clock."

"And?"

"And you need to take a break. You're going to get yourself hurt. Or worse."

"Does it even matter anymore?"

"How could you even say that?!" Isabelle's words cut through the cool autumn air like knives. "Alec is gone. We can't do anything about it, Jace. Think about Clary. And Max. We can't lose you too, okay?"

Jace felt guilty the second she finished her sentence.

"Look," This time, her voice was soft and quiet. "I know you loved him. We all did. But he was your Parabatai. Although I may not know what that's like, I do know that it hurts like hell. But what you're doing, it's a disgrace to his memory. Remember when we thought Clary died..."

"I know." Jace cut her off. He turned away as tears welled up in the back of his eyes. "We're Shadowhunters," He whispered. "These things happen."

Simon's POV

Although they hadn't been the best of friends, Alec's death was still hard on Simon. It was kind of like a wake-up call. The Shadow World was dangerous. People died. Clary had asked him to leave when he tried to comfort her. Jace had left last night and still hadn't returned. He hadn't seen Max or Maryse since it happened.

Alec had been quite annoying in their time together, but Simon knew he was only trying to do what was right. If he knew anything about the hazel-eyed shadowhunter boy, it was that he was a leader. A good one, at that.

"Hey," Jordan opened the door to the apartment. "What's up?"

Simon didn't answer. Jordan put the grocery bags down on the kitchen table and walked over to Simon, who sat on the couch. Jordan sat down next to him.

"Hey, mate. Why the long face?"

"Do you know about the attack on the New York Institute last night?"

"The what?"

"I'll take that as a no." Simon started to tell him what had happened. When he finished, Jordan was looking at him in horror.

"The Head of the Institute died?" His voice was full of shock. "I have to tell the Praetor Lupus."

Clary's POV

Clary was looking at the picture she had drawn the other day of Alec and Magnus hugging on the stairs of the Institute. It was now damp with tears. She was still processing what had happened last night.

She and Alec hadn't really been friends, but they were working on it. Clary still cared about him. She remembered how closed off and strict he had been when they first met. When he had met Magnus, something had changed. He was happier, nicer, and a better leader, if that was even possible.

Oh, Magnus. She thought. This must have been really hard on him.

She remembered what Magnus had said at the pandemonium club when he first met Alec. And then later at his apartment.

"Pretty boy, get your team ready." How he had pushed Jace aside and said, "I'm not talking to you, I'm talking to you."

Alec had looked so surprised that someone had noticed him. It was kind of sad if you think about it.

But now that he was dead, Clary felt horrible. Almost like it was her fault.

Magnus's POV

I could have saved him. But instead I was stupid and blasted Jonathan with magic. I should have froze him. I should have done something.

He hated being in his apartment. It didn't feel right. But he had nowhere else to go. He sighed, walking over to the master bedroom door. He expected it to be empty. But instead, he saw someone sitting on the bed. Someone tall, with black ravened hair and beautiful hazel eyes, his signature deflect rune on his neck.

"Alec?"

Helloooooo! I hope you liked the first chapter. But if not, I'll be ready when you come to attack me. (I'm talking to you, WarmthofRain.) Anyway, what are your thoughts so far? I'm trying really hard not to make this sad but it's a bit difficult when Alec is dead and Malec is everyone's OTP. (And if they are not your OTP, you can leave.) Okay, love y'all! Bye!
