Jace's POV

Every single day for the past week, he had been on the front lines of some sort of battle. Well, except on Tuesday when he had led his team into a vampire lair and almost got them all killed. Alec had told him he was not allowed to lead missions anymore, which he was happy about. It was a lot of pressure.

That made him wonder about his parabatai. Jace had been stressed leading a group of five people. Alec was leading the whole New York Institute, along with Luke's pack.

The Clave had sent a little over two dozen shadowhunters to their Institute since they seemed to attract a lot of danger and needed all the help they could get.

Right now, he was in the Op-Center. He had fallen asleep quite early last night, resulting in him waking up at four in the morning. He was glad that Alec was obviously feeling a lot better. He had felt nothing but anxiety and stress from his parabatai over the past week, but now he seemed to be happy. It was a relief. Alec really needed some happiness in his life.

Jace, on the other hand, was taking pretty good care of himself. Showering when he could, eating whatever Clary gave him, (apparently she could draw and cook.) and sleeping as much as possible. If he didn't, he wouldn't be much help on the battlefield. The stamina rune could only do so much.

He had a mission tomorrow morning. Alec was leading it. It would be the first time he had seen his parabatai in what felt like forever, even though it had probably only been a few days.

Jace sighed, staring at the monitor in front of him. He had patrol in a few minutes. He stood up, grabbing a few seraph blades from the rack. He had one of the shorter shifts today since he had a mission in a few hours. It was just from four-thirty to six. Then he would switch with someone.

The group from the last shift passed him in the hallway as he made his way to the front of the doors of the Institute.

The second he opened the door, the cool night air washed over him. October was the driest month of the year in New York, the temperature felt to be around fifty degrees.

He walked down the steps, taking his rightful position. There were already three other Shadowhunters there, probably the whole group. What kind of psycho would attack at four in the morning anyway?

Jace was right. Nothing happened the whole entire time. Eventually, his shift ended. He switched out with Raj, how had had a minor case of hypothermia earlier that week for some reason. Honestly, Jace didn't care. He deserved it anyway. Raj sneezed as Jace walked away, pulling tissues from his pockets. Jace smirked.

His parabatai bond with Alec started to make this tingle-ly feeling in the back of his mind, and he knew Alec was trying to talk to him.

Jace?

"What's up?" Jace said aloud, starting up the steps. "Are you okay? Where are you?"

I'm fine. I'm at Magnus's loft.

"Oh," Jace continued to speak out loud. "That's good. You need to rest."

Yeah. So, I was just wondering if you recruited other soldiers to come on that mission with us today?

Crap. Jace had completely forgotten to do that.

"Yeah, I totally did."

He could practically see Alec rolling his eyes.

I'll do it myself. The older shadowhunter said before the connection was cut off.

Alec's POV

Magnus had begged him not to leave. So Alec had told him about the mission, and it had only freaked him out more.

"What? You can't be serious. Alec, you can't. I won't let you."

"I have too, Magnus. It's kind of my job."

"If you go, I'm going too. We are not getting separated again."

Alec smiled. He felt bad about not telling him about the mission, but he couldn't find the words to say it. How did you tell your boyfriend that the Clave wanted you to go to Idris for two weeks after getting there the mundane way?

Alec had never once been on a plane before. But that would change today.

"Magnus, you know warlocks are not allowed in Alicante."

"Well then let's change that."

"Magnus..."

"You can tell them that we are a package deal now. If they want you, they have to put up with me."

Alec rolled his eyes.

It was impossible to say no to those chocolate-brown eyes. The way Magnus stuck out his bottom lip and made a pouting face made Alec just want to agree. So he did.

"Fine." He sighed in defeat.

Magnus smiled widely, showing all of his teeth as if Alec had just agreed to take him to Disney Land instead of going on a dangerous mission.

"But you are not going to fight in any battles. Understand?"

"Are you going to fight?"

"Yes,"

"So why can't I?"

"Because," Alec said. He couldn't think of anything else to say.

"Because..." Magnus dragged out the word.

"Because you could get hurt." Alec finished.

"Oh, so you can go risk your life and save the day, but I can't?" Magnus raised his left eyebrow in a joking manner, a small smirk on his lips.

"Seriously, this isn't..."

"Nope. Don't argue. I can do what I want. I'm hundreds of years older than you, Alexander. You're just a little pup. If anything, I should be telling you what to do."

Alec frowned. "I told you not to make 'pup' a thing, remember?"

"Fine. How about Romeo? Sugar bear?"

Alec shook his head. "Magnus, no."

"Okay then. I'll keep trying."

They were silent for a while, unsure of what to do. It was still pretty early.

"Buttercup?" Magnus asked after a while.

"Please stop. I don't need a nickname."

"Why not?" Magnus whined. "I think it would be cute."

Alec continued shaking his head, horrified. "No." He said again.

"I'll let you make up a nickname for me." He tried.

"Magnus, I said no."

"Ugh." The warlock sighed dramatically, falling back onto the bed, spreading his hands out. "Why do you have to be so difficult?"

Alec smiled, shaking his head slightly. "Okay, Mr. drama queen. I'm going to take a shower. We leave for the Institute in thirty minutes. Be ready."

That chapter sucked. But at this point, they all do. I wrote it in like 20 minutes. Really rushed. I spent all day (and like half of yesterday) making that picture and it doesn't even look good. :( As you can see, I started getting kind of lazy as it goes on. The very first one I did (The one in the top left corner of Alec) is my favorite part of that whole thing.

Anyway, I did not read this over because I was supposed to go to bed over an hour ago because I have to wake up early to go to work with my mom so like I gotta go, thanks for reading, love y'all, bye.
