Isabelle's POV

"Amara Fourrain."

"Ave Atque Vale." The rest of them said. "Hail and farewell."

"Andrew Underhill."

"Ave Atque Vale. Hail and farewell."

"Alexander Lightwood."

Isabelle's eyes began to water when Jace said his name.

"Ave Atque Vale. Hail and Farewell."

But when she put her stele to his head, nothing happened. She looked to Brother Zacharia, who stood on her left.

He walked over to her, pulling the sheet off of Alec. But it wasn't Alec. It was a dummy with the same black hair.

"It's not him," Isabelle said.

"I don't understand..."  Jace whispered.

"We shall continue with the others, and deal with this later." Brother Enoch spoke in their heads.

Isabelle nodded. She didn't know what to do. So she copied the Silent Brothers, walking back to the center of the room and raising her arms.

The second it was over, the Brothers turned away, and Isabelle did the same, walking over to Simon. He embraced her in a hug. She returned the hug.

"What do we do?" He asked.

"I don't know. I think someone must have stolen his body for some reason."

Magnus's POV

He didn't know what would happen next, and he didn't want to find out. He told Isabelle he had to go, and portaled out of the Institute. When he arrived back at his apartment, he went straight to the guest room.

Alec still lay on the bed, motionless and pale.

He found himself wondering if this was a good idea. What if Alec didn't want to be brought back?

But what if he did? A small voice in his mind whispered. The angel's servant had said he had not yet fulfilled his destiny. He wasn't supposed to die.

It was midnight before he even knew it, and the servant appeared in front of him once again.

"Are you ready?" He asked.

"You still haven't told me what I have to do," Magnus replied.

"Ah, yes. I'm guessing you would want to know, wouldn't you?"

Magnus nodded.

"Well, first let me inform you that it has been attempted before, but everyone who's tried it in the past has sadly died."

"Died?"

"Yes, there are great risks involved. If this doesn't go as planned, not only will Alexander never wake up, but you won't either."

"Are there any risks for Alexander? Would anything happen to him if I fail?"

"No,"

"Then let's do this."

"After we begin, there's no turning back." He warned. "I don't think you understand how dangerous this is,"

"If it means getting Alec back, then it's worth the risk."

"Okay," He said before he started mumbling something in a different language. "I suggest you sit down."

Magnus did as he was told.

"Take Alexander's hand," Magnus put Alexander's cold hand in his.

The servant started to chant. Magnus's head had started to hurt, and the room looked like it was spinning.

"Don't go too deep," He heard the brown-haired boy say before he slipped into darkness.

Jace's POV

The Silent Brothers explained to them why Alec's body wasn't there.

"Last time this happened, it was because the Angel Raziel took the body," Brother Enoch spoke in their heads. "He usually returns it when he's done with whatever he wanted to do."

"What would the Angel Raiel want with a dead body?" Simon asked.

"Don't question the Angels. It will just get you killed." Jace said to him.

Simon threw his hands up dramatically. "Okay, I'm so scared. Just like how the runes on the training floor would kill me, right?"

"You're still mad at me for that?" Jace asked, obviously trying to hide his smirk.

"Both of you shut up." Isabelle's voice was firm, and both boys stopped talking.

Magnus's POV

When Magnus opened his eyes again, he had no idea where he was. There was no ground under his feet. Everything around him was white. Somehow, he was floating. Something dark and human-shaped appeared in front of him.

He knew exactly what he had to do, even though no one had told him. It was like the instructions were carved into his mind without him knowing. Magnus put one of his feet in front of him. Sure enough, it floated on air when he set it down.

"I am the Guardian of the Deceased. Your first challenge is to get past me, if you can." Two swords flashed into the winged creature's hands. Wings had sprouted from Magnus' back, and two swords were floating in front of him. He grabbed the swords.

It was a fight to the death. And according to the servant, not many people have won.

But this is only the first challenge, Magnus reminded himself. It had been a while since he had actually fought with a sword, and even then he had only used it to deflect Iris's powers. And he had gotten kidnapped, so there's that.

He already knew his powers wouldn't work here. And he had a feeling that if tried to use them, it would get him killed.

"Ready when you are," The creature said, twirling the blades around in his hands. Magnus took a deep breath and ran forward, blades raised.

Clary's POV

She had been drawing an awful lot since Alec's death. It took her mind off of everything. She held her pencil in her right hand, drawing light lines across the page until she had Alec's face staring back at her.

Clary hadn't really been thinking about what she was drawing. She wasn't even paying attention to it. She grabbed the box of colored pencils from her nightstand and started to color the drawing. She chose a black for his hair, adding soft highlights to make it look more realistic. Then she colored his eyes. At first, she didn't really know what color to do. His eyes had seemed to change colors at times. She decided to go with a light hazel and some green. It actually looked good. She shaded his lips with a soft pink, and then his skin. She colored his shirt a dark green, making his jacket black. When she was done, the drawing looked just like him. She closed the sketchbook and fell back onto her bed, closing her eyes.

Magnus's POV

The second their blades met, Magnus knew this was going to be hard. The other boy had strong arms, and he was tall. Taller than Magnus, at least. But only by an inch or two. Magnus moved one of his blades away, stabbing at the other boy's leg. He successfully did that, but the boy didn't even flinch. Magnus stared in horror as the wound healed as he watched it. Maybe this was going to be a lot more impossible than he thought.

Hello. God, I'm glad I changed this because in the original version of this chapter, let's just say didn't go very well for our gang. But this doesn't seem to be going too great for Magnus. Just trust me, this is a lot better than the first version. Even though this is still pretty bad. A fight to the death? Yeah no thanks. I think I'll just be mundane for now. Anyway,  thanks for reading. Love y'all, byeeee! :)
