Chapter 67
Magnus's POV
The dinner had ended hours ago, and Alec hadn't said a word to him since. Magnus tried over and over to apologize, but Alec wouldn't even listen.
It seemed like ages before Magnus finally got Alexander to look at him.
"Listen, Alexander. I know this is hard." Magnus said in a quiet voice. "Trust me; I know what it's like to lose your mother." Alec didn't reply, so Magnus continued to speak. "When you lose someone you love," He hesitated for a second. "You... you never get over it. You just slowly get through each day, and over time, it will become easier as long as you keep them tucked away in a safe place in your heart."
A single tear ran down Alec's face. Magnus knew he was trying so hard not to cry, to hide his emotions. "Alexander, please don't hide your emotions," Magnus whispered, rubbing soft circles into his back. "You don't need to, especially not with me."
"I-I guess I'm just..." He didn't finish his sentence, and Magnus didn't ask him to.
"Come here, Alec," Magnus whispered, pulling the other closer to him. Alec may have been the taller of the two, but Magnus believed he was more sensitive. He could seem so vulnerable at times, where on other occasions he's the badass-iest badass out there.
Magnus wrapped his arms around Alec, speaking quietly into his silky soft hair.
Jace's POV
"He won't speak to me, Isabelle. I don't know what to do."
"I don't know what to do either. We just lost our mom. What do you do when that happens?"
"I don't know," Jace replied weakly. Both of them were still in shock, and they were no longer trying to hide it since Alec had found out. Jace almost regretted the choice not to tell his parabatai. But it wasn't just something you dropped into a normal conversation. You couldn't exactly say, "I don't know why everyone likes that pizza place so much. It's so overrated. Oh, by the way, your mother was killed in battle. Now, back to the pizza."
It just didn't work.
The morning of the funeral came faster than Jace would have liked. He wasn't ready to say his goodbyes to Maryse Lightwood, and even though she wasn't his actual mother, she was the only one Jace had ever had. Today he would see Alec again, and he wasn't going to lie to himself, he was nervous.
Isabelle took a deep breath beside him. "You okay, Iz?" He asked.
She straightened her poster, smoothing her white dress down.
"I've seen better days," She started sadly. "But I've also seen worse. I may not have everything I need, but I have you guys. I woke up today with aches and pains, but I woke up. We know who killed her. We know where he is, and we know how we can kill him. We can bring justice to her, Jace. All we would have to do is kill Lorenzo. I want him dead. We have to kill him."
"We will, Izzy. We will. Just wait until after today, and we'll go after him."
...
Just as Jace had expected, Maryse's funeral only had a small crowd. Jace could see Isabelle wiping a tear from her cheek as the Silent Brothers raised their arms into the air.
After it was over, Jace watched from a distance as Clary spoke with Magnus in a hushed tone. He wasn't sure what they were saying, but he didn't care. He had way too much on his mind right now to pay attention to anything else.
"Jace," Alec's voice shook him out of his mind. "You want to come hunting with me?"
"You're going hunting?"
Alec nodded. "It takes my mind off of things, and we haven't done it in a while. I think it's about time we go slay some demons, together, as a team."
Jace smiled. "Of course," He replied. "I'm going to go change."
"Meet you on the steps in twenty minutes," Alec said before turning and rushing off into his room.
Jace stepped into his own bedroom, shutting the door behind him. He took off his white suit, slipping into some black jeans, a grey t-shirt, and a thick leather black jacket. It was November now, and the weather was getting quite cold. He pulled on his combat boots, grabbing a few seraph blades and attaching them to his belt. Jace looked in the mirror. He had dark circles under his eyes, probably a result of not sleeping the past two nights.
Jace sighed, deciding to head out to the front. Besides, Alec was early to everything. He was probably already waiting.
Jace was right. Alec stood leaning again the wall, his arms crossed over his chest, how bow and quiver strapped to his back. He had his eyes closed, and his hair was blowing slightly in the small breeze.
"Ready?" Jace asked once he was in front of his parabatai.
Alec's eyes flew open. "Yeah, yeah. Sorry."
"Why are you so jumpy?"
"I'm not," Alec replied, swinging his bow off of his shoulder and holding it in his hand. "Let's go."
...
"You nervous?"
"No,"
"Don't lie."
"Fine. I'm nervous. Wouldn't you be too?"
"Nah," Jace replied. "I mean, what are you worried about?"
"What if i mess it up? Or say the wrong thing or..."
"It won't matter what you say. All Magnus cares about is that he gets to spend the rest of his life..." Jace adjusted Alec's tie. "...With you."
Alec ran his finger through his hair, causing Jace to frown. "You messed your hair up. Isabelle is going to be mad."
Alec didn't reply. He was looking at himself in the mirror. Jace smiled. He was happy that his parabatai was finally getting married, especially to someone like Magnus. It all seemed so perfect.
But it didn't seem to him that Alec was thinking the same thing.
"Alec," Jace placed a hand on his shoulder. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine."
"What are you thinking about?" Jace asked quietly.
They were the only ones in the room. Isabelle and Clary had run off hours ago to help Magnus, and Jace had stayed with Alec.
"Just what Jonathan said before we... you know,"
"Slit his throat?" Jace asked. "You can't believe anything he said, Alec. He's like Valentine. He'll get you twisted around his disgusting finger in a matter of seconds."
"I know,"
Suddenly the door flew open, and Isabelle hurried inside, dressed in a beautiful dress. "The guest are starting to arrive," She started, smiling like an idiot. "You ready, Big Bro?"
Hey. What's up? WAIT. I know the answer to that. Stuff. Bam. I'm magic.
