Chapter 43: An Old Friend

You've almost reached the lodge. Clem holds her arms because she's cold. You take off your coat and wrap around Clem. She looks at you in shock.

Clem: You didn't have to do that.

You smile at her.

You: I still did it.

She smiles back.

Luke: Come on, lovebirds! We're almost at the top!

You roll your eyes at this.

You make it to the boarded up lodge. Rebecca walks up to Carlos and Nick very slowly, because she's out of breath.

Rebecca: Well? What are we waiting for?

Carlos: We have to be careful.

Rebecca stops walking and puts her hands on her hips.

Rebecca: Careful? We've been on the road for five days. My back is done bein' careful.

Alvin walks by the boarded up windows.

Alvin: Doesn't look like anybody's home.

He tries pulling on a board.

Alvin: Damn. Nailed down tight. I'll check 'round front.

Carlos: I'll go with you.

You and Clementine lean on the railing as you both look scout to see if anyone followed you. You are approached by Luke.

Luke: Well, it'd be good to know if anybody's actually back there.

You all look at the post.

Luke: Could probably get a better view from up top. You'd have an easier time gettin' up there. Either of you feel like takin' a look?

Luke leans on the railing.

Luke: It'll be just like climbing a treehouse. You know, just a really tall treehouse. Made of steel.

You: Clem had a treehouse once.

Luke: Well, there you go.

Clem: I hated it.

You will remember that.

Luke: Oh.

You all walk to the post in front of the ladder.

You: I got this.

Clem: I can do it.

You: You sure? I think I can handle it.

Clem: I feel like it.

You: If you insist.

Clem steps forward and looks up at the ladder.

Luke: Just take it slow, and I'll catch you if you fall. Probably.

You both look back at him at the same time with concern.

Clementine starts to climb the ladder.

You: Just take it easy. You'll be fine.

Luke: Got a good grip?

Clem: Yeah.

Luke: When I was a kid, we used to jump rooftops downtown. Now that was fun.

You: That sounds stupid.

Luke: Yeah, yeah, it was. The trick was not to look down, though.

Clementine loses her footing about halfway up.

Clem: Ahh!

You and Luke both hold out your arms in the same way.

You: Clem!

Luke: Whoa, whoa, whoa. You're fine, you're fine. Just look at me, okay? You're fine. Alright, just--just slow down. Just for a second, okay? Got your grip?

Clem looks down at you and Luke.

Clem: You both look like idiots!

You and Luke at each and you both put your arms down and you scratch the back of your neck while Luke yells up to Clem.

Luke: Just climb the thing.

Clem continues to climb and she makes it to the top.

Clem: Made it!

Luke: See anything?

Clem: I can see the bridge! Wait, I see something!

You: What is it?

Clem: A light. But wait, there's another.

Luke runs to the group.

Clem: Y/N, Luke?

You: I'm here, but Luke left.

Clem: Okay. I'm coming down.

Clem climbs down the ladder. She loses her footing again and falls.

You: Clem!

You hold out your arms and you catch her bridal style.

You look at her.

You: You okay?

Clem looks into your eyes.

Clem: ...Yeah.

You hear Luke.

Luke: Listen, everyone, just stay calm.

Woman: Who are you?! Are you trying to rob us?

Rebecca: Excuse me, honey, but do I look like a fucking thief?

You: We gotta go.

You put Clem down and you both run to the group.

You get to the group and you both slowly make your way through the group to see who they are.

Man1: Everyone calm down.

Alvin: Hey, man, YOU calm the fuck down.

Carlos: Sarah, get behind me.

Man1: Just tell us who you are.

Alvin: We ain't here to rob nobody. Put the gun down, man.

Man2: Fuck that!

Luke: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

You see someone you thought you'd never see again.

Woman: Please, just do what he says.

It's Kenny.

Kenny takes a quick glance at you and Clem and looks away, but then looks back in shock when he realizes that it's you. He lowers his rifle.

You and Clem push your way through the group.

You and Clem: Kenny?!

Luke: Wait, you two know this guy?

Kenny: Y/N? Clementine...?

Within an instant you both run up and hug him. You all pull out of the hug and Kenny gets on one knee to hold your shoulders.

Man: I'll take that as a yes.

Kenny: These people with you?

You both nod.

Kenny stands up.

Kenny: We can talk inside. He says, gesturing to the lodge.

Man: Great. I just started dinner.

Carlos: Are you sure you don't mind?

Man: It's gonna storm soon. Please, come in.

You all head to the front of the lodge. You, Clem, and Kenny just can't stop smiling.
