Chapter 140: Am I a Murderer?

You wake up to Clem still asleep and being snuggled onto you. You see AJ at the end of the room, so you put your glasses on.

AJ stands up and turns around, revealing two cups of coffee. You shake Clem a little and she wakes up.

AJ walks up to you both. You and Clem sit up.

AJ: Made you some coffee. It was in the kitchen. Tenn said that I could have some. I didn't steal it.

You and Clem take the mugs and you both take a sip. It's actually pretty good.

Clem: I'm surprised you remember how to make it.

You: We haven't had coffee in a long time.

AJ: You put it in hot water.

You: You're right.

Clem: Thanks.

You: Yeah, thanks, buddy.

You take another sip.

AJ: Last night, with Marlon? I heard Louis, and...what he called me. Am I a murderer?

You and Clem look at each other, not knowing what to say.

AJ: Louis called me a murderer. But...but we're supposed to kill bad stuff. Monsters. Did I do it bad? I thought Marlon was bad. He killed Brody, he...he kept telling lies.

You and Clem look back at AJ. You sigh. Set the coffee down onto the nightstand and you get on AJ's level.

You: AJ, this'll be hard for you to hear. But Louis was right. Sometimes people do bad things, like Marlon did. But when you shot him, he wasn't a threat to us anymore. If you kill someone when they're no longer threatening you, that's murder.

AJ turns around and walks over to his bed.

AJ: What are we gonna do?

You look at the ground and you try and come up with a solution. You sit on your bed.

AJ: Guys?

You look up at him.

AJ: If I'm a murderer, am I gonna die, too? He says, turning around.

Clem: What? No.

AJ: Well, I think murderers are like monsters, and...I know what happens to monsters. Nothing good. Nothing good at all.

Clem: AJ, you're not a monster.

AJ: They think I am. I wish they didn't.

You: We're not gonna let anything bad happen to you. Not ever.

AJ: Promise?

You: Cross my heart--

AJ: And hope to fly?

You: That's almost right. We're going to fix this. All of us. You say, patting the bed in between you and Clem, gesturing for AJ to sit in between you both.

AJ walks over to yours and Clem's bed.

You: We're gonna help you atone.

AJ: Atone? He says, sitting in between you and Clem.

Clem: It means make up for what you did wrong. We'll make it all right with the others.

AJ looks confused about something.

Clem: Hey. What is it?

AJ looks specifically at you.

AJ: You've killed a lot of people. You told me your friend Kenny became a monster. Why didn't you stop him?

You look down and you start to get a bad memory.

You: I had to run.

AJ: Why?

You look at AJ.

You: We got into a car crash and he wasn't able to move. Walkers started to come for us...so he told me to run and that'd he'd buy me some time... But I'd do almost anything to go back and just put him down so that he wouldn't have to suffer... He sacrificed himself for my safety... For a while, I didn't understand why he did it... But when Clem and I found you at the ranch, I understood. 'Cause I'd do it for you, too.

Clem: Same here, goofball.

There's a silence between you all.

AJ: I love you, guys.

You: We love you back...

You and Clem wrap your arms around him.

You: We love you back...
