Madelyn walked into Marshall's basement studio with her phone in hand. Maverick had just started kindergarten and Malakai was working on ABC Mouse. She opened the door to the room that Marshall was in. The babies were all sleeping upstairs. He looked over at her, instantly concerned by the look on her face.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"You lied to me," she accused.
"About what?"
"He told you he was here to kill you?"
Marshall sighed heavily. He knew what she was talking about now. She was just watching him. He got up and walked toward her.
"Babe," he began.
"Marshall, what the fuck?" she said.
"That's why I didn't tell you. Shit, you were freaked out enough without knowing that."
"He was here to kill you?"
"Apparently."
"Holy shit Marshall."
"Madelyn, calm down. He didn't get to obviously. I'm still standing here with you."
She threw her arms around his neck and he shook his head with a smirk on his face.
"If I would have known I would get this kind of attention, I would have told you sooner," he joked.
She lightly smacked him. He kissed her lips.
"I'm still standing babe. No worries and we don't have to worry about him now," he said.
"Thank god," she replied.
"Princess, we are all right,"
She nodded. He pulled her to his chest and kissed her forehead. She ran her hands up and down his back.
"We are fine. I was thinking though about renting a cabin on the lake and getting a break. What do you think about that?" he asked.
She nodded her head. A break from their home was just what they needed. He nodded and hugged her tightly. He knew it was unsettling to her what the man had said to him and it worried him because he didn't want her to overthink it.
"I will get someone on it," he said.
She nodded again. He gave her that little grin and went back to working on his music. She made her way upstairs to check on the kids. She was still slightly rattled by everything that was coming to light about the break in. It had terrified her to the point she had contemplated asking him to move.
"Mama," Maverick said.
"What baby?" she asked snapping out of her daze.
"My computer died,"
Maverick was remote learning for kindergarten at this point. She sighed but found the charger for him so he could plug in the computer that was issued by the school system. He hugged her. She kissed the top of his head and checked on Malakai. He was having the time of his life with the tablet. She moved upstairs to get the triplets when they woke up. Marshall came up the stairs from the basement.
"Madelyn, are you still tripping out on that stuff?" he asked, cautious of his mouth because of the kids.
"I just can't believe he said he was going to kill you," she said.
"My main concern wasn't me. It was making sure he didn't get to you or the kids."
She nodded. He helped her get the triplets up from their nap. She couldn't believe they would be one soon. It was like the time had just flown by.
"So are we going to the lake?" she asked.
"Next weekend," he replied.
She nodded. He smiled. They needed the break from everything and what better way to do it than to get away for a bit. Madelyn sighed.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"Nothing babe," she said.
"Mads."
"Are the girls coming with us?"
"Whitney maybe. The other two got their own stuff going on."
She nodded. Maverick ran into the living room and threw himself on his beanbag chair. Madelyn gave him a funny look.
"Boy what is wrong with you?" she asked.
"Mama, Lily said I'm cute," he looked up at her.
"Ok?"
"Mama she is so pretty."
Marshall chuckled at his son's reaction to the girl from his class. He knew it would happen at some point but he wasn't really expecting it to be kindergarten. Madelyn shook her head.
"I thought girls were supposed to be the dramatic ones," she said.
"Not in the Mathers clan," Marshall laughed.
"Brings online dating to a whole new level."
Marshall was cracking up. Maverick threw a pillow at his dad. Madelyn kissed her son's head. Marshall playfully tackled him and began tickling him. Maverick squealed as he did it.
"No, daddy, I'm sorry," Maverick laughed.
"Are you really?" Marshall asked.
Maverick shook his head and giggled at his dad's wounded look. Marshall began to tickle him again.
"Daddy, do you love mommy?" the little boy asked when Marshall stopped.
"Of course I love mommy," Marshall replied.
"How come you hide from her?"
"When I work?"
"No at home."
"I don't hide from mommy. I've been working at home lately bud. But I love your mommy very much."
Maverick nodded as if he was thinking it all over in his mind. He looked at his mom who was extremely confused by his line of questioning.
"If I love Lily, do I have to fight with her like you and mommy?" Maverick asked.
"Mommy and I don't fight," Marshall said.
"Mama took us away and we stayed at Uncle Nate's."
"Buddy, sometimes grown ups go thru things but mama and I are good."
It was dawning on both of them, how their behavior had affected the kids over the last few months. Madelyn refused to look at him when he tried to make eye contact with her. He was slightly worried about it but he wasn't going to show that to his five year old.
"Promise?" Maverick asked.
"Yeah bud, I promise," Marshall said.
Maverick seemed satisfied with his answer and ran off to find Malakai in the playroom. Marshall grabbed his wife around the waist as she attempted to leave the room. He pulled her against his chest.
"We are fine. I love you so much. I love our family. We are fine," he said softly.
"I guess I just assumed he was too young to realize what went on with us recently," she sniffed.
"Don't cry baby. Everything is fine. We have it all under control. Our babies are fine."
She nodded against his chest. He sighed heavily. His arms remained wrapped tightly around her waist as she began to calm down.
