Marshall was home before her next appointment. He was acting as himself again. She hadn't brought up why he had acted weird in LA. He sat down on the couch as she was getting ready to leave.
"Madelyn," he said.
"What?" she looked up at him.
"We need to talk."
"Now? I have that appointment."
"Yeah it kinda has to be now."
"Ok,"He sighed heavily. She grew concerned.
"It ain't anything bad," he said.
She nodded, not at all convinced. He looked at her.
"Baby, I know you think I was distant while I was gone," he said.
She nodded slightly. He reached for her.
"I wasn't trying to be distant. I felt guilt that I wasn't here when you needed me and I knew you needed me. I had talked to Nate already. He told me how you were handling the session. Baby, I wanted to jump on a plane so bad and come home. I knew if I talked to you for an extended period of time and you started to cry, I would have come home," he said.
She nodded, understanding where he was coming from.
"I don't like being without you. I hate hearing you cry and not being able to fix it," he said.
"I can't lie, all I wanted to do was come home and have you hold me," she replied.
"I hated that I couldn't be."He hugged her tightly. She moved in his arms and kissed him. He looked at his watch after they broke apart.
"You gotta get going, mama," he said.
She nodded standing up. He walked her to the door.
"I will be here with open arms when you get home," he said.
She smiled at him before going to the car. She drove to the office.
"How are we today, Mrs. Mathers?" Dr. Coleman asked.
"Good actually. I had a good talk with my husband this morning before I left the house," Madelyn said.
"Good to hear. You ready to dive into your own life a bit more?"
"Not really but let's do it anyway."Dr. Coleman chuckled. Madelyn took a seat on the couch.
"So last week we talked about your removal from your parents," she said.
Madelyn nodded.
"Where did you go after that?" Dr. Coleman asked.
"I was in four different foster homes before high school." Madelyn said.
"Were they good foster homes?"
"No they were almost as bad as being at my parents other than I didn't get beat every day."
"Were you close to anyone in any of these homes?"
"Just one. A boy. We weren't there long together but he was almost my protector. I actually was shocked to find out that he was my now husband's brother a few years back."
"Really?"Flashback
Madelyn walked into Ashley's house. She had a black eye and a very distinct bruise on her face. She was nervous as all get out. Ashley's boyfriend came into the living room. Madelyn's jaw dropped as she recognized him.
"Oh my God, Nathan?" she said.
"Madelyn Jaycobs?" he was in just as much shock.
"Wait, you two know each other?" Ashley asked.Nate nodded as he hugged Madelyn.
"We were in the same foster home for a while. The foster mom accused of us inappropriate behavior and they moved us both," he said.
"Wait did you?" she began.
"No Ashley, there were other guys in the house who kept trying to hit on me and get me to do things. Nate kept them from me and protected me," Madelyn said.Ashley nodded. Madelyn couldn't believe that her best friend from school was dating the guy she had seen as her brother in such a short time while living in hell.
End
"Well that's a small world," Dr. Coleman said.
"Extremely," Madelyn laughed.
"So he protected you and then you were moved."
"Yes, I met Ashley, our freshman year of school. We became friends fast."
"Did you ever have anyone over?"Madelyn shook her head.
"When I turned 18, that was it. I was already working and had saved enough that I got an apartment. It was a crappy apartment in a really bad part of town but it was mine," she said.
"Did you date at any of this point?" Dr. Coleman asked.
"A bit here and there. Nothing serious until Michael."
"Tell me about that."Flashback
Madelyn and Michael had met at a party both drunk out of their mind. Someone had slipped something into Madelyn's drink and she felt amazing. It was that way every single weekend. He would take her to a party, get her completely trashed and do what he wanted to her. She was so out of it that she didn't ever say no. Even when he had allowed his friend Corey to come join in the fun.
End
Madelyn was close to tears again realizing how messed up it all sounded now. At the time she thought it was love. He had said he loved her. She thought she loved him. She felt dirty now and wanted to go home and shower. Then she wanted to curl up with her husband and cry herself to sleep. The session ended and she had a new appointment card in her hand. She made her way out to the car and drove home. True to his word, Marshall was waiting for her when she got home.
"I need a shower after that session," she said softly.
"That sounds dirty," he joked.
"It is. We dove into when I was with Michael and met Corey."
"Oh baby, I'm sorry."Marshall pulled her into his arms.
"Boys are down for a nap. Shower together?" he asked.
She nodded. They headed up the stairs to their master bedroom.
