chapter six ~ the one with al pacino's butt
Heather's POVCelebrating my friends was something more rewarding than anything I could imagine, now that I was living in this big city and had real friends, it was nice to spend time with them. And we did normal things that friends do, something that I found more exciting than anything else was the different career paths that they had each taken. Ross had founded his love of dinosaurs whilst in college and was now a Dr, working as a Palaeontologist for the Museum. Chandler hadn't really found his passion but was good with numbers and worked in finance. Phoebe was always destined for an unusual job and loved giving people massages, something that she would give her friends for free and we were very grateful for that. Monica dreamt of being a Head Chef but for now was working different catering jobs because she didn't have the money for her dream. Rachel was currently a waitress but was looking for other jobs on the side because she was desperate to get into fashion of some kind and then there was Joey. Joey wanted to be an actor; he hadn't had his big break yet but we were all in the theatre to watch him in the first play that he had been in since I moved here.
"Look, there's Joey's picture!" Rachel squealed as she showed me the programme that she had bought again.
We were sat with Monica, in front of the others as it was our first time coming to one of these things and we were more enthusiastic about it than the others. "This is so exciting!"
"You can always spot someone who's never seen one of his plays before. No fear, no sense of impending doom."
"Don't be mean, he worked really hard for this play." I replied back to Chandler, who had found several negative things to comment on ever since we had taken our seats. "I had to listen to his German accent for hours."
"The exclamation point in the title scares me." Phoebe admitted, pointing to her own programme as I turned back to face the front because the curtains were opening. "It's not just Freud, it's Freud!"
"Shh, the magic is about to happen."
When the show finished, there were several different emotions that were going through me because I wasn't sure what to feel. I had helped Joey rehearse for the play several times when my apartment was free in the day and it had seemed good when he was by himself but now that I had seen it in a professional way; it was awful. The other actors weren't as involved as Joey and didn't seem like they wanted to be there. Something that Joey had failed to mention was that the show was also a musical and several times, he burst into song for no reason. Usually I was a big fan of musicals, but in this sense it didn't feel right. The songs weren't even that musical and none of the actors could sing, not even Joey could hold a note which made me wince several times when he had to belt the last note in the big operatic songs.
"I feel violated." Rachel said from beside me as I silently agreed.
"Did anybody else feel like they just wanted to peel the skin off their body to have something else to do?"
