chapter fifty three ~ the one with the competition
Heather's POV

Thanksgiving in New York is always interesting, ever since I moved here, we had always had a fun time on the holiday. For my first Thanksgiving, Monica had been making different styled potatoes for everyone but when a giant balloon stole our attention, we ended up locked out of the apartment and didn't get to eat the big meal that she had prepared. It hadn't been the most relaxing day, but I had a feeling that we would never have a relaxing Thanksgiving whilst we were all friends with each other. Something always seemed to go slightly wrong on that holiday and made things more awkward than they needed to be. I didn't mind it though, compared to the holiday that I had growing up, this kind of Thanksgiving was way more interesting and I got to share it with the people that had basically been my family for the past three years. And this year, I was able to bring my own guest with me because Nick couldn't get time off work to fly over to visit his parents; so, he was spending the holiday in the city and I invited him over to join us so that he wouldn't be alone on the holiday.

"Hey, who wants to throw the ball around?" Joey asked once it was announced that the food was all in the oven and all we had to do was wait for it to finish cooking. "Maybe get a little four on four going?"

Rachel practically jumped at the chance. "Oh, that would be so much fun!"

"Can I play too?" Phoebe asked, turning towards me. "I never played football, like, ever."

"Great, you can cover Chandler."

"No, I don't really want to play." Chandler mumbled, not feeling in the mood to do anything because of his breakup with Janice; he had found out that she was cheating on him with her husband. So, they ended things and now my brother was convinced that he was destined to grow old alone because Janice was his only option.

Joey nudged his shoulder. "You never want to do anything since you and Janice broke up."

"That's not true. I wanted to wear my bathrobe and wear peanut clusters all day. I wanted to start drinking in the morning." He pointed a finger at us. "Don't say that I don't have goals."

"Chandler, you have to start getting over her."

I agreed and came over to beg my brother to join the game. "Yes, and the best way to get over someone is by getting your ass kicked by your sister."

"Plus, everyone will be mad at you if you don't play because the teams won't be even."

"Alright, I'll play." Chandler rolled his eyes as the rest of us got overexcited at the chance to play a friendly game of football; it wasn't one of the sports that I had been overly keen on growing up but I watched it in college and understood the rules.

"Yay!" Rachel turned to her boyfriend. "Ross, do you want to play football?"

"Uh, Monica and I aren't supposed to play football." Ross muttered, rubbing the back of his neck.
