chapter one hundred and seven ~ the one with an engagement party
Joey's POV

When the friends found out that their favourite couple were engaged, they were ecstatic. Well, most of them were, because for some reason everyone had placed bets on which couple, they thought would get engaged first and some of them had lost the bet. The others joked that the bet was an easy win because Chandler would never be ready to settle down and get married, to which the response was that he had already proposed but Monica rejected him because he had only done it as a way of apologising to her. Due to the excitement that the engagement caused, the friends had decided to host an engagement party for the couple; inviting all of their friends and family around to Monica and Rachel's apartment so that everyone could celebrate together. The apartment wasn't very full when the party started with just the friends and Gunther helping themselves to snacks, but more guests arrived throughout the evening.

"Congratulations, Heather!" Melissa appeared out of nowhere, backing the newly engaged couple into the corner of the room as she squeezed them both. "It feels like it was just the other day that you took me to see Joey's play and told me that he was gay."

Heather tried not to sound irritated when seeing her colleague but it was hard when she had been sure that she wouldn't be at the party. "Melissa, what are you doing here?"

"Your friend Rachel invited me, I couldn't miss your engagement party, could I?"

Nick placed his hands on the back of his fiancé's shoulders, looking over to Heather as he spoke. "Plus, there was actually something that we wanted to ask you."

"Really? Something you want to ask me?"

"As you know, we're getting married soon and we, well, I wanted to know if you would be my Maid of Honour?" Melissa asked, squealing with excitement at the end as if this was a pivotal moment in their 'friendship' which Heather was sure, didn't exist.

"Your Maid of Honour?" She repeated, looking to Joey for some help but he just walked away to talk to Ross and Chandler because he didn't want to get involved in this drama. "Are you sure?"

"Well, you're like a sister to me. And it helps that you and Nick were so close."

"We were dating. Are you sure that there isn't anyone else that you'd want to ask? Someone who maybe, didn't used to date your soon-to-be-husband?"

Melissa seemed adamant that even though her fiancé had dated Heather, she still wanted her to have an important role at the wedding. "Please, Heather, it would mean so much to me?"

"Okay, fine!" She huffed, knowing that this argument could carry on for hours. "I'll be your Maid of Honour."

"Oh, that's great, now, I have loads of ideas for a themed Bachelorette party." Melissa squeezed her tightly before trying to move her to a more secluded part of the room so that they could talk but this wasn't what she had wanted her engagement party to end up like. She didn't want to be ushered away by someone that was marrying her ex, just to talk about their upcoming wedding. Luckily, Heather was saved and she had never been so excited to see all seven of Joey's sisters at the apartment, in her life.
