chapter fifty six ~ the one with the empty vase
Heather's POV

Spending time with Joey's sisters had helped to take my mind off Nick for a few hours, they were all so nice and didn't seem to hate me after what Chandler had did, which I was grateful for. They had even told me that I was welcomed over for dinner whenever I wanted, which seemed too nice and a little weird seeing as they weren't offering any of Joey's other friends the same treatment. It was hard to move on from Nick, seeing as he lived across the hall from me and at some point, we were bound to run into each other. It was similar to my relationship with Carl, he still lived in the same hall as my friends, I just hardly ever saw him because he was hardly ever in the apartment. He was still busy with work and was spending even less time in his own home than he did when we were together; which I was kind of happy about because it meant that I was less likely to bump into him.

Of course, I had things to be happy about now and they didn't include my dating life but that was okay because there was plenty of time to work on that. Right now, I was focusing on my career, I had passed my Real Estate exam and was looking for a company to join so that I can really start my plans rolling. But I hadn't realised how hard finding a company to join would be and because I need to start earning money before I lose my apartment, I had to settle for a job that would pay the bills instead of one that I actually enjoy. Monica managed to get me a waitressing job at the diner that she works in and even though I didn't want to be a waitress, it was better than nothing and would help me pay my bills until my big opportunity comes along.

I decided to wait for Monica so that we could both head over to the diner together for our shift to start, but popped in to see my brother across the hall instead of waiting for her to get ready in the kitchen. A part of me wondered if working together was the best idea, especially after what had happened with Joey and Chandler when they worked together. But I tried to stay positive because this was my only way of paying bills and I needed this job. I also had to be super grateful to Monica for getting me this job because she hates it just as much as everyone else, but agreed that it wasn't the worst thing in the world to get paid to do. What I wasn't expecting was for Phoebe to also be there when I came in and she seemed to want to talk to me.

"Oh, Heather!" She clapped her hands together as I shut the door behind me. "Just the person I wanted to see, listen, I know that you're single now and I want to do you a favour."

"Thanks Phoebe, but I'm not really into that..."

She shook her head. "No! Not me, I have this client, and I think you'll really like him."

"I don't know, I don't think I'm ready to start dating again." I mumbled, fiddling with my fingers as I spoke quietly to her.

"That's fine, he's not interested in dating."

Chandler overheard parts of our conversation and rolled his eyes. "She isn't ready for any kind of relationship, okay? She's just broken up with her boyfriend, let her have a few months of being single and then set her up with an ass that'll break her heart."

"Excuse me, I do not just date asses."

"Well you haven't got the best track record." He snapped back but before I could say anything, the door opened again and in came Joey; who didn't seem like he was in the best mood after his audition that morning.

"What's wrong?" Phoebe questioned, before lowering her voice. "Can you see ghosts too?"

"I messed up! I messed up really bad."

I placed my hand on his shoulder. "Come on, it can't be that bad."

Joey handed his resume to my brother who began reading it aloud. "Three years of Modern Dance with Twyla Tharp? Five years with the American Ballet Theatre?"

"Okay, I take it back, it's really bad." I mutter, taking my hand off his shoulder.

"Hey, everybody lies on their resume, okay? I wasn't one of the Zoom Kids either."

"Can you dance at all?" Phoebe questioned.

"Yeah, I can dance." He said confidently and began doing some kind of dance which didn't really look like a dance and caused all of us to shout abuse at him. "Oh, no, no, no, no!"

"What is that?"

"Sure, it looks stupid now." Joey answered, like it was obvious. "There's no music playing."

The phone ringing was enough for my brother to leave the conversation. "Right, I have to get that, but, no." As he walks over to the phone, Monica comes into the apartment and I get to ask her about her date with Julio.

"How was last night with Julio, Senorita?"

"Who's Julio?"

I fanned myself jokingly. "This super sexy waiter from work."

"He is so amazing. He's so sexy and smart. Which makes him even sexier. Look, I got to tell you this. Last night, we were fooling around and all of a sudden he stops to write a poem."

"Get out. I couldn't stop if a meteor hit me." Joey laughed, as the rest of us chose to ignore that comment because Chandler seemed very happy with his phone call.

"Okay, we have our Stripper." He announced, excited for a Bachelor party that he was attending. "A Miss Crystal Chandelier."

"Well sure, you name a kid that, what do you expect them to grow up to be?"

"Anyway, when he left, he forgot to take the poem with him. Now, I am totally dense about poetry but I think this is pretty good. Check it out."

We all crowded around the piece of paper to read what Julio had written in the middle of their fooling around. "The Empty Vase, translucent beauty..." Joey began speaking.

"To yourself." Chandler snapped, once he had finished it, he turned to Monica. "You know what? That's pretty good."

"I'm glad you guys like it. Okay, we've got to get to work." Monica said, as we both grabbed our bags.

She tried to take the paper but Joey held onto it. "Oh, I'm not done."

"Alright, just give it back when you're through. Bye guys!"
