chapter seven ~ the one with the blackout
Heather's POVA normal week was coming to an end and I still had nothing to brag about, I had spent the entire week sending off job applications and trying to find someone that would hire me but it was proving to be more difficult than I had expected. My friends offered to help which I was grateful for but this was something that I wanted to do by myself, this was something that I had to prove and show everyone that I was capable of doing something in this new city. However, things were harder than I expected and for some reason, no one was hiring; in my head I was wondering whether to just give up and ask Gunter if I could train as a waitress at Central Perk; but not even that job appealed to me. I had no idea how Rachel was still working there because with all the abuse she takes, I would have quit ages ago. Maybe that was my issue, I wasn't a big risk taker and therefore, I was struggling to go out of my comfort zone? I needed to get out there and try something different, but just when I had that thought, the world turned against me.
I was in my apartment, flicking through newspapers to try and see if any jobs were being advertised when suddenly, I was sat in the dark. I tried to turn the lights back on but the fuse must have blown. So, I stepped forward to check out of my window and to my surprise, the whole street was in darkness. Whatever had blown the fuse must have been pretty powerful because the whole city was blacked out. There was no way that I was staying in my apartment by myself during a blackout, so I grabbed my keys and stepped out, hoping that I would see one of my friends or that they would be in one of the other apartments because I couldn't do this by myself.
"Joey! Thank God, I was worried that no one would be here." I sighed in relief once I saw one of my friends but frowned when I saw what he was carrying. "What is that?"
"We're lighting candles in Monica's apartment; do you have any that you could bring?"
"I'll go check."
So, five minutes later, I was carrying two of my large candles into the apartment next door; happy that my other friends were all here because I didn't want to be going through this alone. Monica had just come off the phone with her Mother when we came inside, Rachel was freaking out about the whole thing and Ross was taking his time, lighting some of the smaller candles that were lying around the apartment. I gently placed my own candles on the coffee table and stepped back to admire just how pretty the candles were making the room look and tried not to laugh as Joey manoeuvred himself around the furniture.
"And officiating at tonight's blackout is Rabbi Tribbiani."
"Well, Chandler's old roommate was Jewish, and these are our only candles." He explained as he set the candle on the sideboard and turned to face the rest of us. "So, Happy Hanukkah everyone!"
"Eww, look, ugly naked guy lit a bunch of candles." Phoebe yelled, pointing by the window as we all ran over to see. I had no idea why we had such a liking for this man but during blackout it wasn't a very pretty sight. "Ooh!"
