chapter sixty six ~ the one with the bad director
Heather's POV

The night everyone had been waiting for had finally arrived and we were all going to see Joey's play. I had spoken to him on the phone before he headed to their last rehearsals and he seemed nervous, he just wanted everything to go well and didn't want to disappoint us but I reassured him that whatever happened we would be proud of him because of how hard he had been working on this project. Plus, I had my own worries about the evening because of who I was bringing. A part of me was glad that Melissa had shown interest in the play because if she hadn't then I would have had to find a date to bring and that was too much stress for me. Instead, I could tell everyone that I was bringing a friend from work because I hadn't told anyone the truth about what happens in the office, it was too embarrassing and I'd rather them think that I was enjoying my dream job rather than regretting the opportunity.

Once finishing work, I headed over to Monica and Rachel's apartment because they were going to help us pick outfits for tonight as we all wanted to look our best, just in case someone rich or famous decided to come to the event. I was given a long tight silver dress where the bodice was covered in sequins; at first glance I thought that it was too much to wear to an event like this but when I tried it on, I fell in love with the outfit and even agreed to borrow Monica's shoes that went perfectly with the colour scheme. One part of me was really excited about going to see the play that Joey was starring in because he had worked so hard and had been rehearsing for this moment for such a long time; but the other part remembered that Melissa was coming as my plus-one and that meant that I was going to have to spend the whole night with her, which I wasn't looking forward to.

"Heidi, what a nice dress." Melissa said monotone as I opened the door to my apartment to let her inside, she wouldn't tell me her address and insisted on coming to my place before heading to the play. "You didn't tell me that we were dressing so fancy tonight, now I look underdressed."

"No, you look amazing-"

"No, I look like something dragged off the street. There's only one way to settle this."

And that was how Melissa got us to swap outfits. She didn't even need to persuade me, I had to do whatever she said because if I didn't then she could make up some big story about me and tell Mr George, and get me fired. She was the only way of keeping this job and I needed it, especially now that I had quit the diner and would have no chance of getting a place there again. Melissa needed to be constantly happy and for that reason, I had to do whatever she said to keep her happy. Which was why she was now wearing my long tight silver dress with sequins covering the bodice and I had to run to my room and attempt to find something reasonably good to wear. It would have made more sense for us to swap outfits, so that I wore whatever she had been wearing but she made a big fuss about not trusting me to take it to the right dry cleaner and I decided to just wear something of my own instead of making a bigger fuss of the matter.
