chapter seventy three ~ the one with betrayal
Joey's POVThings had taken a massive turn in Joey's life today, just when he thought that things were going well with Kathy, she had broken up with him. He wasn't usually the kind of person who liked relationships, he liked the freedom of being able to go between girls and spending time with different people, he didn't want to be tied down. But after having two different moments with Heather, where they almost kissed, twice, he knew that he needed to do something to take his mind off everything. That was why he had started dating Kathy, she was the opposite of Heather and she had helped him to forget about his feelings for a while but for some reason, he couldn't get the blonde out of his mind; she was always lingering there and he felt awful about it.
Sure, when she had first moved into the building, he was attracted to her but then he found out that she was dating someone and he took a step back, not wanting to get in the middle of a relationship. Then to complicate things even more, she ended up being his best friend's little sister, Joey knew that no matter how close they got, he couldn't mess with Chandler like that and decided that they would never be more than friends. He carried on dating his women and she carried on with her own relationships, he hated Carl and what he did to her, silently hoping that she would never date someone again because he silently wanted her to himself. But then Nick came along, and he knew right from the beginning that there was something off about the guy, he tried not to get involved because Heather was happy and then everything went wrong. The Beach House was the first time that he almost took things too far, they were both drunk and they almost kissed. Then the other night on the rooftop, after slow dancing to no music, they almost kissed again. Joey knew that he wouldn't be able to push away his feelings forever but he didn't want to know what would happen once he accepted them.
He decided to ignore all of his emotions when he got back to the apartment and turned on the TV, finding a movie and making himself a drink which would drown out his sorrows. Just as the movie had started, the door opened and he panicked at first thinking that it would be Heather but sighed in relief when he saw Chandler stepping into the apartment. He couldn't deal with her right now, knowing that he was emotional and would probably do something that he would later regret; at least he could trust Chandler and knew that his best friend wouldn't do anything to upset him more than he already was. "Hey, Sambuca Margarita?"
"Is that a real thing?"
"Well, we only had Sambuca, so it is now."
"Listen, uh, Joe, I need to..." Chandler trailed off, obviously nervous about whatever he needed to say. "I need to talk to you about something."
"What's up?"
"It's about Kathy. I like her. I like her a lot, actually."
"You do?" Joey asked, turning to his drink and picking it up carefully. "Well, your timing couldn't be better because she's not my girlfriend anymore."
