chapter sixty five ~ the one with the first day
Heather's POVMy first day as a Real Estate Agent and everything seemed to be looking up for me. Rachel helped me once again to pick an outfit because I wanted to look professional and sophisticated for my first day in the office and the outfit that she put together was incredible; I couldn't even believe that I had owned these clothes because it was like I had never seen them before. She had such a talent for fashion that she could make anything look good and I was glad that she was my friend, therefore she was able to help me with my fashion disasters instead of making fun of me. I tried to look as confident as possible when I made my way to the office and kept my head held high when walking past all of the other desks because I didn't want my co-workers to think that I wasn't going to pull my weight. I wanted them to think that I knew what I was doing, that I was confident and would work well for this company; hopefully that was what I looked like and I wasn't making a fool of myself.
Mr George met me at the front desk and gave me a more thorough tour of the office, explaining where all of the different rooms were and showed me how to use the machines. I didn't think that the employer was supposed to do this much, as usually he would ask one of the other employees to explain this sort of thing but I didn't complain because it bought me more time to get on his good side. Even though I didn't want to be known as the person who sucked up to the boss, it wouldn't hurt to get on his good side on my first day and I wanted him to know how grateful I was for this opportunity. Once the tour was over, he led me to an empty desk where I was going to be working and pointed to another woman who sat on the desk next to mine. She seemed around my age, with short brown hair and was busy with whatever work she had been assigned that day. Maybe she would be my first work friend, that would be fun, she looked nice and that was always a bonus; having a friend that you worked with.
"Heather, this is Melissa Warburton. She will be your mentor and will teach you the ropes, I'm sure that you'll get along tremendously. I'll leave you to acquaint yourself to the office." He sent me one last smile before leaving me next to my mentor.
"Nice to meet you."
She didn't look up from her desk when she replied. "Whatever."
Thinking that I had heard her wrong, I tried again to start a conversation with her. "So, how long have you been working here?"
"Don't try to make small talk, okay? I don't like you and I won't ever like you."
This wasn't the way that I wanted my first day at my new job to go and there was no way that I was going to let it slide. The old me that was scared of my own shadow would have just let her say whatever she wanted to me, that was what I had done when I was with Carl but that was three years ago and I was a different person now. There was no way that I was going to let this woman walk all over me just because she didn't like me, she was going to be my work friend if she liked it or not because this was my second chance and she was going to enjoy being a part of it. So, I brushed my hair over my shoulders and set my hands on either side of her desk because I meant business; this was a technique that Phoebe had taught me to use if anyone gave me grief on my first day and I was going to make sure that I used it on this woman before she made my life here a living hell.
