chapter thirty two ~ the one with the hot christmas
Heather's POV

As if I knew exactly what was going to happen, Ross completely messed up. Instead of just choosing Rachel, like we all knew he should have; he listened to advice that Chandler bestowed upon him. He listened to Chandler, the guy who hasn't had one serious relationship in his life and for some reason, the advice was to write a list of pros and cons for both women to decide who was the best option. After making the list, Ross decided that the best option was Julie but when he broke up with her, Rachel found the lists and was not happy about it. As expected, because who would be happy when the man that you loved wrote a list highlighting all of your insecurities as reasons that he shouldn't be with you. So, now both Ross and Rachel were single and they were both as miserable as each other, but it was their problem to deal with and the rest of us were just staying out of it.

On a lighter note, it was almost Christmas and one of my favourite holidays. Chandler would argue that our holidays were ruined after our parents divorced and every season just turned into different arguments in front of different decorations but Christmas was the one holiday that I loved. I just loved the idea of decorating the house, buying gifts for each other and setting up this big meal that everyone could enjoy together. This year was my first real Christmas in the city, I wasn't counting last year because I was trying to forget the horror that was last year but I had a feeling that this Christmas was going to be the best one yet and I couldn't wait. I had already decorated my apartment, setting up a Christmas tree and decorating the table even though I was coming to spend Christmas day with my friends in their apartment.

Today, I was helping everyone decorate Monica and Rachel's apartment as this was where the big Christmas party was going to be hosted and everything needed to look good otherwise Monica would kill all of us before the big day. Chandler wasn't really helping as he sat on the step ladder, twirling bits of ribbon around his fingers and daydreaming about whatever story he could think of in his head. It was me, Rachel and Joey who were actually decorating the tree with the green and red decorations that Monica had laid out for us. She wasn't here to help but had given us direct instructions of what to do and what not to do; secretly, we all knew that as soon as we were gone, she was going to rearrange everything anyway but it was still fun to decorate it together.

"You know, I remember our Father all dressed up in the red suit, with the big black boots and the patent leather belt, sneaking around downstairs. He didn't want anybody to see him. But he'd be drunk, so he'd stumble, crash into something and wake everybody up."

Rachel stepped away from the tree and frowned at my big brother. "That doesn't sound like a very Merry Christmas."

"Who said anything about Christmas?" Chandler asked, as I slapped his shoulder because this was what he always did; tried to make everyone feel sorry for him when telling them stories about our childhood. He made it seem like it was all horrible but in fairness, we were very lucky children and we should be more grateful about what our parents did for us.
