I breathed steadily, the smell of sweet coffee and pastries wafting into my nose as I checked over the display items. My (h/c) was pulled to the top of my head in a bun, kept out of my face as I worked.

"Hey (f/n)!" My boss, Jonathan, called as he approached me from the back. I closed the glass door and stood, turning to face the male. He had thick black hair slicked back and buzzed on the sides with a neatly trimmed beard and mustache. He also had an aqua colored button up shirt tucked into black slacks, black dress shoes on his feet. "It's about time to be closing up, you should get going." He suggested, leaning against the counter.

I sighed and looked over the empty cafe dining area and nodded slowly, "Tiffany staying to help make tomorrow's pastries?" I asked. There were a few of us lower level workers that were in charge of helping the pastry chefs in the back considering there was a lot to be made. 1 manager and 3 workers.

Jonathan nodded and glanced around for a moment, "Yeah, you've been taking third shift all this week and Tiffany figured you deserved a break." He stated and I sighed.

"Alright, I'll pack up. Night Jonathan." I smiled tiredly and made my way into the back. I passed through the kitchen to see the third shift workers coming in along with some of the girls I worked the counter with. I smiled and bid them all a goodnight as I entered the locker rooms.

I was quick to take off my apron and hang it in my locker, grabbing my purse and slinging it over my shoulder. I took my hair out of my bun and grabbed my hair clip instead just to keep it back. After that I was ready to make my way home.

I slipped out the back door and breathed in the cool and crisp autumn air. There was a park across the street that wasn't that busy right now, it was 6:30pm. I sighed again, standing there for only a moment longer to admire the colorful leaves falling before heading to the sidewalk to make my way home.

I loved working at the cafe, it was a simple job that made good money. I worked as a barista for the most part, sometimes only working the register. The cafe opened at 5:00am and first shift ended at noon. Then second shift was from 12:00-7:00pm which is also when we closed. Third shift came in around 6:30 to start making dough and batter and stuff and then they'd come in again at around 3:00 (if they had went home before then) to get the first batch of stuff baked and ready before getting to go home.

Us baristas made about $12 an hour working a 7-hour shift. We'd get paid $6 an hour for OT when it was our turn to help make everything with third shift people but we only stayed long enough to make the batter. So I made decent money, enough for a small apartment and the necessities along with some extra for frivolous things.

I hummed a small tune as I walked, watching the sun set slowly. I lived 20 minutes away walking distance but I preferred the walk, it was my way to get exercise.

As I got closer to my house, I started to hear crying. But it didn't sound...human. It sounded almost, mechanical. The innate concern in my nature caused me to slow and listen as the crying got louder. My brows scrunched together and I followed the crying to an alleyway where I found an open cardboard box. As I got closer, I spotted a robotic looking child. He was red and blue with silver accents and bright glowing blue eyes. A blue substance was streaming down his face and I frowned.
