Kitty
I tipped the bottle of wine back, clearing out the last few sips before setting it down on the nightstand. It was dark outside and I felt almost numb as I watched the moon over the trees, Mom's Christmas lights shining around my window from the outside. Red, blue, and white, sparkling like little stars. My lights had been swapped out from a warm yellow to red, the bloody glow helping to ease some of the turmoil.
You need blood.
"I'm not a fuckin' vampire," I snorted disdainfully, "you can shut the fuck up now!"
"Hey there nut-bag, talking to yourself again?"
Jules's voice echoed as she opened the door and flipped the main light on, my eyes narrowing while I flipped her off and dropped down onto the bed.
"Bite me," I muttered, "did you bring me more booze?"
"Sure did drinky," she teased as she handed me a beer, one in her own hand as she tapped the neck against mine, "how long did it take you to polish that wine off?"
"About a half hour, give or take." My lips grew a little tingly as I took a drink. "Have fun with Tom and Chelsea?"
"Yeah, it's still so weird to see him all dark and eyeless," Jules dropped into my desk chair, her eyes wandering to the lone photo hung up on my wall, "he talks about Jeff a lot, you know. I think he misses having another guy around."
"He does, they spent a whole year putting up with each other, it's enough to drive anyone nuts who isn't already."
You mean like you are?
"Oh fuck off," I whined as I squeezed my eyes shut, "not even the booze is keeping them quiet. They aren't even witty anymore, just fucking obvious."
"Is it really that bad going so long without killing someone?"
"Yes," I admitted, "I guess once I got a taste for it my brain decided it wanted more. Needy, needy bitch..."
"What exactly happens when you let them go for too long?" Jules tipped herself in the chair slightly as she looked back at me.
"I snap. Pick fights. Sleep with murderers," I chuckled dryly at the last one as I chugged the rest of my beer, "all I know is Jeff needs to come home soon or else I will kill some fuckers. I miss seeing my beautiful face on the news."
Her eyes darted away and I knew she hated listening to me talk about my hobbies but I couldn't help it, not when I felt this shitty. I patted my blankets absentmindedly until I found one of my knives and played with it, intoxication doing nothing to hinder my expert handling. Suddenly I found myself back in the good old days when he found the house, my drunken lunge spot on while he tried to shoo me away.
"I'm sorry," I started, my voice no more than a weak grumble as I got to my feet, "I just feel...wrong. Everything feels wrong. I know you don't like listening to me when I'm like this but I don't want to disturb Chels, and Tom and Nina are a little too eager to jump the gun."
"No, no...don't ever apologize to me Kitty." She shook her head as she got up and wrapped me in her arms, resting my head on her shoulder as we swayed, "I want to understand how you feel, in a way. Just so I can try to help."
"No, you don't," I told her sternly, "and I don't want you to ever understand what this feels like. You still have an option Jules, I don't."
"You know I'm not leaving you. Especially not when you're in this bad of shape."
"You just...deserve so much better than this." The rest of the alcohol finally hit me as I sat back down. "He should've never brought you back. I never wanted you to see me like this."
