Christmas Eve. I felt sort of hopeful as I woke up today, propping myself up in bed and taking a look out into forest outside. The thought of a white Christmas this year was on my mind but I wasn't hopeful for that one as there wasn't a cloud in the sky. The temperature could definitely be cold enough for it, though. I recoiled as soon as my toes touched the hardwood in the hall and scowled.

When I approached the balcony I could hear voices, remembering that Nina had friends over and humming to myself as I ducked back into my bedroom to change. No longer sweats and one of Jeff's shirts and instead I donned leggings and my favorite Christmas sweater, the image of a burning church making me snicker as I passed by the mirror and trotted downstairs. Jules was on the couch watching TV while Nina, Pierce and Tanis sat at the dining table with coffee and waffles. I ruffled Nina's unkept hair as I walked by, making myself a cup of spiked eggnog before hopping onto one of the stools.

"Where's the other hooligan at? Still sleeping off his hangover?"

"Vlad's got his head in the toilet," Pierce laughed, "he likes to drink but he can't handle his liquor."

"I was the same way!" Jules called from the living room.

"She's not lying, she'd drink a six pack while we were camping and take a few shots after and boom— she was a goner," the three of them snickered as I told the story, "my bet is he'll like dark wines better."

"Is that a burning church on your sweater?" Nina asked, her eyes narrowed as she examined the fabric and I nodded.

"Hey, I'm Catholic," Tanis piped up, "that's kind of offensive, don't you think?"

"Shit, really?" My face flared with embarrassment before she cracked a cheeky grin.

"I'm just fuckin' with you, I have the same sweater at home."

"Oh you cheeky little shit you had me going," I laughed while I let out a relieved sigh, "I like her, she can dish it out good."

"I've got an older brother so I learned how to be an asshole from the professionals," she loosed a hearty laugh around a mouthful of maple syrup, their final comrade finally joining us as he swept his hair out of his face.

"Good mornin' sunshine, welcome to the land of the living," I poked a little fun as he waved at me.

"I'm never drinking again," he groaned as he took a seat at the table, "give me your coffee, heathen child."

"Get your own bitch," Nina snorted as she yanked her cup out of his grasp.

"He says that but he'll drunk text me in a week quoting some stupid TV show," Tanis said with a snicker and Pierce nodded.

"Mugs are on the top shelf, Keurig's next to the sink," I pointed the way while Vlad got back to his feet.

"You're an angel," he laughed as he reached up and procured a cup, my cheeks burning when I realized he looked a little like Jeff from behind, almost as tall and his hair was just a touch choppier.

"So are Tom and Chelsea coming over tonight or tomorrow morning?" Jules asked as she joined me, lacy pink bralette and tattoos visible as her ripped up shirt hung off of her shoulder.

"Tonight, Chelsea's off early so they're bringing the party here. I still need to wrap presents, want to help me?"

"Sure, not like I have anything better to do today," she snorted, clinking her mug against mine before we took a drink.

The kids eventually dispersed and Nina promised to come back down and do dishes eventually, their footsteps echoing through the house until the four of them ran back out into the wild. Jules and I just laughed as we finally wandered back upstairs, ducking into my room and pulling all the stolen boxes and wrapping paper out from beneath my bed. She lit a joint and smoked while we worked, setting it up in the ashtray on my desk before slicing through the snowflake pattered paper.
