5: so we got ourselves a medicine student?

Elaine's POV

I've been in LA for a few weeks now and today I'm accompanying Zara to the airport. She has a family emergency back in Australia. Her mom is in ICU. We are currently at the airport.

Zara: thank you for being here for me

Elaine: anytime, please keep your phone next to you I'll be checking on you any minute I can get okay?

Zara: sure will...bye

Elaine: Bye

I watched as she faded in the crowd. My heart stung thinking of how she's been under the weather ever since she heard her mom was hospitalized a week ago and the fact that she's getting worse kills her. After a while she completely disappeared that's when I went back to my apartment and called my mom.

Sandra: (yawns) hello sweetie

Elaine: sorry mom I completely forgot about the different time zones

Sandra: it's okay sweetie anytime...how are you?

Elaine: I'm good but Zara she's not so good

Sandra: oh poor child her mom is still hospitalized?

Elaine: yeah her condition got worse she was moved to ICU

Sandra: oh my goodness I'll keep her in my prayers

Elaine: mom

Sandra: what's bothering you baby?

Elaine: I was thinking of coming back to South Africa. I mean what's the use of me being here if I can't get an internship. Mom if I don't get this internship I won't be able to graduate and get my degrees. I wanna finish so I can stop burdening you.

Sandra: (sigh) if you feel that way then come back but I don't want you to live with regrets thinking what if you'd stayed and I don't think your father would've appreciated you throwing the towel cause you feel like you're burdening your own mother. Elaine I'm your mother it's my job to take care of you and I really love taking care of my daughters. Let's make a deal you'll only come back after a month if you find nothing worth staying for, okay?

Elaine: deal besides I wouldn't wanna leave without saying goodbye to Zara. Thank you mom I just really wanna make you proud

Sandra: I'm proud of you Elaine I've ways been.

Elaine: bye mom I love you

Sandra: I love you too honey

After that call with my mom I felt motivated. Yes the call was short but it did the trick trust me. I turned on the local radio station and it was all cool until I heard that a local diner is looking for a waiter/waitress. I decide to try getting this job because being here is kinda depressing especially since Zara left. I hop in the shower to freshen up and after the shower I wear a white summer dress, chuck taylors and a black denim jacket I refine my slick ponytail that I did when I went to the airport. Grabbed a sling bag and head to the shop. Which is only a few blocks away see advantages of living in downtown everything is in a walking distance. I arrive at the diner and ask for the manager. A tall guy with a huge beard comes out

Figure: hello miss how can I help you?

Elaine: hi I'm Elaine and I heard on the radio that the diner needs a waitress

Figure: Oh in that case I'm Mike follow me

We head to his office at the back of the diner and he offers me a sit and juice

Mike: so Elaine how old are you?

Elaine: I'm 17 sir

Mike: I see so do you have any experience?

Elaine: not really sir but I used to volunteer in an orphanage

Mike: used to? why did you stop?

Elaine: I stopped because I had to move here

Mike: oh so where are you from?

Elaine: I'm from South Africa sir

Mike: uh interesting...can I see your CV?

Elaine: (I hand it to him)

Mike: so we got ourselves a medicine student?

Elaine: yes sir but I'd really appreciate this job

Mike: I'd be nice to have a doctor in the house. We open at 10 but I expect my staff to be here at 8.

Elaine: uhm does that mean I got the job?

Mike: yes the dress code is denim and white t-shirts/shirts on Fridays. Oh please be here at 7:30 so we can go through your contract. We can't know cause there's a problem with the printer

Elaine: Thank you sir...thank you very much

I arrive in my apartment and call my mom. It rings for a few seconds.

Sandra: hello(sleepy voice)

Elaine: Hi mom sorry for waking you up again

Sandra: you know what they say second time is a charm

Elaine: Mom I got myself a job as a waitress

Sandra: you see what happens when you listen to mom?

Elaine: yeah it maybe not what I wanted but at least I'll be able to pay my rent and send some money to you

Sandra: no don't send money to me just enjoy yourself

Elaine: okay but I'll send some to Isa then

Sandra: it's your money your rules dear...I love you sweetie

Elaine: I love you too mom

I then head to bed. Before I knew it, it was already morning and it was my first day at my new job. I freshened up and wear my ripped jeans and a white Chanel shirt that Zara gave to me. When it was 7 I head out I then arrive at 7:15 to find Mike still opening the diner.

Mike: it seems like you and I will get along just fine

Elaine:yes sir.

We get in the diner and we go through the rules and then the staff arrives and I'm introduced. Everyone is super friendly. The day goes by without any hassle. When it was fifteen minutes to knock off Mike calls me to the side.

Mike: uhm Elaine I donno  if you mind signing your contract tomorrow because the printer hasn't be fixed?

Elaine: no problem sir

Mike: bye bye see you tomorrow

I then head off and put my earphones on.

Well well well I think someone is about to make an appearance finally. Drum roll dum dum dum....six letters B.I.L.L.I.E❤️😤
