lxv. snow days and lone rangers

I rolled out of bed and looked out the window. The whole world was covered in white. I looked at my alarm clock. 9:04. Dang it. I'd already missed first period. I opened the door and found a stack of pancakes on the breakfast table. Dad was next to the griddle making more.

"School was canceled," Dad said.

I smiled. "Yay!" I shouted. I started shoveling pancakes into my mouth. Just what I needed. A nice day off from school and homework. "Where's Noah?" I asked.

"He went outside to play with his friends," Dad said.

I was hoping to stay inside, but I decided that I should probably keep an eye on Noah. I put on my coat, which was still an ugly shade of brown. I was kind of hoping that I could keep growing though, since I was so short now. Oh well. I put on my hat and gloves and went outside.

When I got there, Noah and his friends were throwing snowballs at each other. Aaron was also out there. "Hey McKenna!" he shouted.

"Hi Aaron," I said quietly.

Aaron scooped up some snow and tossed it at me. "Come on McKenna! Aren't you going to play?"

I brushed the snow out of my face, but it was still wet. I didn't bother to get revenge. "I wasn't planning to play," I stated as I started heading back home.

"Wait! McKenna!" Aaron shouted.

I marched through the snow. Everything was wet now: my boots, my gloves, my coat, my face. I just wanted to skip to the hot cocoa, so that's what I did.

"Back already?" Dad asked. I nodded. "That's okay," he said. "Want some cocoa?"

"Yes!" I shouted as Dad turned on the stove. I took off my coat, hat, and gloves and sat down at the table. Things had just gotten so awkward with Aaron lately. Justin knew not to ask questions or bother me, but Aaron didn't.

I checked the calendar. Noah and I were visiting Mom on Saturday. I wasn't exactly looking forward to it, but what could I do? She was my mother. Dad set a cup of hot cocoa on the table and I drank it quickly. Then, I went back to my room.

I felt like I was alone in this world.

That's because I probably was.
