lxix. summer and blue skies

Finally, the school year was over. I had looked forward to this all year, but honestly, it wasn't that exciting. It was nice not having homework though.

Everything was quiet that day. Not even the birds were singing. It just felt wrong for everything to be this silent. I opened the door and climbed up to the treehouse. It was still kind of a struggle to get up there. Why couldn't I just be taller? That would make everything easier. Aaron always said that if someone dropped a one hundred dollar bill, I would be the first to get it, but that seemed to be the only advantage of being short.

I loved everything about the treehouse. It was quiet and I didn't have to have anyone up there if I didn't want them. I kind of missed hanging out with Aaron every day though. I had been seeing him less and less because we didn't have any classes together and we didn't have recess anymore. Justin and I were still close friends though.

I could feel the tree branches shaking. I peered out the treehouse window and saw Aaron climbing up the tree. I opened the door. "Hey Aaron!" I shouted.

"McKenna!" he exclaimed. He smiled and climbed into the treehouse.

"I haven't seen you in a while," I stated.

"I thought you were avoiding me," Aaron said.

"Why would I do that?"

"I don't know," Aaron said. "I've been kind of a jerk lately. I mean, with everything going on with your family..."

"I don't care."

"What?!?"

"I don't care. Mom's gone and it's better that way."

"Don't you miss her?"

"No," I said.

"You know, I think I would miss my mom if she left," Aaron said.

"Your moms are nice," I countered.

"Let's just stop arguing," Aaron said. He looked at the radio and said, "I wonder if this thing still works." He turned on the radio and music flooded the treehouse.

Maybe I had been avoiding Aaron a little bit, but that was over now. Even if he didn't show it, I knew he cared. I couldn't just shut him out. He was my best friend.
