xxiv. winter winds and hiding in the treehouse

I was on the bus home again. School was really boring that day, so I just stared out the window. I couldn't wait to get home. Then I would do my homework and then I could just play.

Aaron was sitting next to me. He was reading a book. I looked over his shoulder. Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I looked out the window again. It was just the same things as I saw every day on the way home. The snow was draped across the roofs of the houses. Every house kind of looked the same now that all of the Christmas lights were down. Occasionally I would see a person walking their dog or a car driving down the road. Odiosis was kind of a boring town most of the time. I would be home soon though.

One of the big kids moved up to the front. "Hey dorks," she said. Aaron and I both ignored her. "Oh, you're not paying attention? Let's see if I can make you pay attention." She took Aaron's book and tossed it towards the back.

"That was mean," I mumbled.

"Give that back!" Aaron said. "I need to return it to the library!"

"Serves you right, nerd," she said.

"Aaron's not a nerd!" I said.

"Yeah, you're a nerd," Aaron said.

She gasped. "I'm not a nerd!"

"Yes you are," Aaron said.

The bus pulled up at our stop. "Bye, nerd!" Aaron said to the girl.

"That was kind of mean," I said.

"Maybe," Aaron said. "See you tomorrow McKenna."

"Bye Aaron!" I climbed up the tree into the treehouse. Bronto and Strawberry were already up there. They were always there for me. I crawled into a corner and decided to escape from this cruel world for a while.
