xlviii. being big kids and eating gummy worms

Mom and Dad were fighting. Again. Sometimes it felt like they never stopped. They used to be really nice around each other, but now they were always either yelling at each other or giving each other the silent treatment.

School was out, so I guess I was officially a fifth grader. I liked the idea of being the queen of the school, but I knew that wasn't really the case. There were a lot of other kids that really ruled Odiosis Elementary School. Still, we were the big kids.

Since I didn't like being in the house with Mom and Dad, I usually ran off to Aaron's house. Justin's house had more fun stuff, but it was too far. Unfortunately, Noah had to come with me.

One morning, I woke up to Noah jumping on my bed. "What is it Noah?" I asked.

"Can we please go to Aaron's?" he asked.

"I guess so?" I said. I yawned and started to get out of bed. I hated having Noah tag along to everything, but I didn't exactly have a choice.

I met Noah at the door when I was ready to go. He still couldn't cross streets by himself, so I had to walk with him. Aaron's house wasn't far though.

When we got there, Aaron's mom answered the door. She smiled when she saw us. "Hey, come on in," she said.

We both went inside. "Thanks for having us," I said.

"No problem," Aaron's mom said. Both of Aaron's moms were so nice. Why couldn't my parents be more like them? They loved each other and they loved Aaron. That was better than my family.

Aaron was already in the living room with a bag of gummy worms. "Hey," he said.

"Hi Aaron," I said. I gave him a quick hug and sat down next to him.

"What's up?" he asked.

"Mom and Dad are fighting again," Noah explained.

"Oh okay," he said. "Want any gummy worms?"

"No thanks," I said.

"Yay!" Aaron exclaimed. "More for me!"

I smiled. At least Aaron was here. There was something about just being around him that made me feel okay. Maybe things would turn out okay. Maybe I could survive until school started.
