lxxxiii. guitars and rock and roll

I knocked on the door. It was the middle of the day and I was bored, so I decided to visit Justin, but only because I had run out of other options. I had finished my book and Dad wouldn't take me to the library and Noah was hogging the TV again.

"McKenna!" Rebecca shouted. She smiled. "It's so nice to see you again."

"Yeah, you too," I said.

"We definitely need to catch up on some stuff," Rebecca said.

"Leave her alone," Robin interjected. "She's here to see Justin, not you."

"How would you know that?" Rebecca asked.

Robin was right, of course. I did want to see Justin, but I wasn't exactly going to say that. The twins still looked a lot alike, but I could definitely tell the difference now. Thankfully, Justin walked in at that moment.

"Hey McKenna," he said. "You have to see what I made."

I followed him back into his room. "What is it?" I asked.

"My parents bought me a guitar, but I made a few...modifications." He gestured at something that looked like an electric guitar that had been smashed into a gazillion pieces and then was put back together in such a way that it looked like an electric guitar, but not quite.

"That's your guitar?" I asked.

Justin nodded. "It may not look great, but it sounds amazing. Think of it this way: homemade cookies taste great, so homemade guitars must sound fantastic!"

"Sure..." I said skeptically.

Justin picked up the guitar and strummed a few chords. I didn't know a whole lot about music, but Justin was right. It did sound pretty cool. “That’s neat,” I told him.

“Told you so,” he said.

“School’s starting soon,” I said. “Did you get your schedule yet?”

Justin nodded and showed me his schedule. We were actually in a lot of the same classes again. “Robin said that we have to do a dance unit in PE this year,” Justin said.

“That sounds horrible!” I exclaimed. Hopefully things had changed since Rebecca and Robin were in eighth grade. Justin picked up his weird looking guitar again and started playing. Then we started talking about all of the books we had read recently.

That was Justin. Half book nerd, half music nerd, but an all-around great friend.
