cxxi. the movie and spending time with aaron
Aaron and I decided to go out to see a movie. I didn’t know what movie we were going to see, but I knew it would be fun. Aaron was going to pick me up in ten minutes, and I still wasn’t ready.
“Where are you going Kenna?” Brooklyn asked me. “Prom?”
“No,” I said. I was wearing jeans and a T-shirt, so this was definitely not prom. I wasn’t going to prom this year anyways. Last year was miserable, and I didn’t particularly want to relive that.
“Where are you going then?”
“To the movies,” I said.
“What are you seeing?” Brooklyn asked.
Why did Brooklyn have to be so curious? “I don’t know,” I said.
“Okay,” Brooklyn said.
I glanced out the window. Aaron was here. “Bye Brooklyn,” I said. I waved as I ran out the door and hopped into the passenger seat of Aaron’s car. We drove to the movie theater.
“What do you want to see?” I asked Aaron.
Aaron shrugged. “I don’t know.”
“Me neither,” I said. “None of these look all that good.”
“As long as I have my supply of gummy worms, I’ll be fine with anything,” Aaron said.
“How about that one?” I said, pointing to what appeared to be a sappy romantic comedy.
Aaron rolled his eyes. “Fine,” he said.
We got in line to buy snacks and popcorn. Between the two of us, Aaron and I got a large popcorn, two bottles of water, a pack of Sour Patch Kids, and a pack of gummy worms. Then, we went in to watch the movie. As usual, we had to sit through half an hour of commercials before we actually got to see the movie. Aaron passed the time by making jokes about the commercials, some of which were actually pretty funny.
Finally, the movie started. It was an okay movie, but not great. I ate most of the popcorn within the first half of the movie, so I got a little bored during the second half. I think I even fell asleep at one point, but Aaron woke me up.
“What did you think of the movie?” Aaron asked after it was over.
“It was alright,” I said.
“Alright? I thought it was awful,” Aaron said.
“It wasn’t that bad,” I said.
“Agree to disagree?” Aaron asked.
I nodded. “Hey, I have a question,” I said. It was something that I had been wondering ever since we arrived.
“What?” Aaron said.
“Is this a date?” I asked.
Aaron shrugged. “Do you think it should be?”
That was not what I was expected. “I… I don’t know,” I said finally. “I guess not. I don’t want to ruin our friendship.”
“Then it’s not a date,” Aaron said. “Are you ready to go?”
“Yeah,” I said. Aaron and I walked back to Aaron’s car and I got in the passenger seat. I still wasn’t really comfortable with driving after what happened to Brooklyn. “I still had fun,” I told Aaron.
“Me too,” Aaron said. “I had a lot of fun.”
I smiled and decided to enjoy Aaron’s presence for a while.
