xxiii. christmas day and cool presents
I couldn't sleep, so I just stared at the alarm clock Mommy and Daddy gave me for my eighth birthday. 3:13 glowed in green. I rolled around in bed a bit and then got out and walked up to the window. Maybe I would see Santa.
Nope. Maybe Santa had come already. Maybe he was still on his way. I looked at the clock again. 3:14. There was only one way to find out if Santa had come. I opened the door and ran out into the hallway. I tiptoed past Mommy and Daddy's room and found my stocking. Mommy made it when Noah and I were really little. Mine said my name in big letters and it had a snowman on it. I peeked inside.
Santa had given me a few pieces of candy and a new bracelet. Nothing all that exciting. I was about to go back to my room when I tripped over something.
I got back up and looked at what I tripped over. It was a white box with a note attached to it. I picked up the note. It was too dark and I couldn't read it. I looked through Mommy and Daddy's stuff until I found a flashlight. I turned it on and read the note. It was typed on plain white paper with a little picture of Santa
Dear McKenna and Noah Gregory,
One of my elves told me that you wanted a Wii. As the bringer of Christmas cheer, I made it my duty to find it for you, and here it is! Remember to SHARE and use it responsibly!
Love,
SantaWow. An actual note from Santa! And we got the Wii! I had to tell Noah. I ran into his room and tapped him on the shoulder. He didn't wake up so I shook him a little.
"Wake up wake up wake up wake up," I said.
"What?" Noah asked.
"Santa gave us a Wii!" I shouted.
"YAY!" Noah screamed.
"Quiet down," I said. "Mommy and Daddy can't hear us."
It was too late. Mommy and Daddy were already up. "What are you doing out of bed?" Mommy asked.
"Santa got us a Wii!" Noah said.
Mommy looked at Daddy. "Neil, how did you do it?" she whispered.
"I got a bonus at work," Daddy said.
"And you spent it on this?" Mommy said.
"Let's not talk about it in front of the kids," Daddy said. He turned to us. "That's wonderful!" he said.
"You're very lucky Santa got that for you," Mommy said.
"Can we play it?" I asked.
"Not now," Mommy said. "It's too early."
"I'll set it up for you in the morning," Daddy said.
"But it is the morning!" I said. I looked into my room. "It's 3:21 AM, so it's the morning."
"How about at 7:00?" Daddy said.
"Okay," I said. That was a long time to wait, and I knew I couldn't go back to sleep. I got back in bed and stared at the alarm clock some more. 3:22. It was just too long to wait.
