lxx. the fourth of july and being kids again
"Come on Kenna!" Brooklyn whined. "We're gonna go see the fireworks!"
I really didn't care that much, as usual. Besides, there were so many people there. It would just be too overwhelming. I couldn't exactly say no though.
"I'm coming," I told Brooklyn. I grabbed my latest book and headed out to the car. Noah, Shonali, and Dad were already there. I helped Brooklyn get into her car seat and sat down between her and Noah.
"Fireworks! I can't wait to see the fireworks!" Brooklyn exclaimed. She just seemed so happy all the time. I found it hard to believe that anyone could really be that excited about something.
"We'll be there soon," Shonali said. Dad continued driving until we pulled up in front of the park. People had already set up picnic blankets and chairs so they could watch. Noah scouted out a spot and started helping Dad set up. I looked around. Justin's family had a spot up in front. I went over there.
"Hi Justin!" I exclaimed.
Justin took out his earbuds. "Hey McKenna," he said.
"Where are Rebecca and Robin?"
"Rebecca's at a party and Robin's with her friends," Justin told me. "Aaron said he might be here later though."
I would know these things if Dad ever got around to giving me a cell phone. He always said it was too expensive. I looked around and saw Aaron and his family coming towards the park. I waved at him and he waved back.
When Aaron reached our spot, Justin said, "So do you want to see the playground?"
"Yeah!" Aaron shouted. Despite all of the kids that were here, the playground seemed mysteriously empty. We ran over there. Aaron immediately got on the slide, while I chose the swings. I pumped my legs back and forth and eventually got off the ground.
Things were just so much easier when we were little, but maybe we could get a little bit of that magic back. I was high in the air when I saw the first firework go off. Justin was there next to me. For once, I was actually having a good time.
Another firework went off. And another. We had the best seats for the best light show in the sky.
